Poppy King's Lipstick Queen

Forget about painful plumpers that sting your lips into pouty submission. According to Lipstick Queen creator Poppy King, the road to fuller lips should involve no pain, and all gain. “It is my theory that the right ratio of shimmer to shine can create the illusion of plumper lips,” King believes, which led her to design a new line of eight earth-shattering glosses, aptly called Big Bang Theory, that are formulated with perfect proportions in mind. Intrigued? They officially hit stores in March, but if you live in the Los Angeles area, you can give them a test run in the company of her royal majesty at one of four different Space NK @ Bloomingdale’s locations, starting today. Make-up Trend: Smooth Lips

Check your ingredients! Cinnamon mints and gum can dry and irritate your lips. Also, some lipsticks contain a preservative, propyl gallate, that cause irritation on many people’s lips. New lipstick pigment adds shine and disguises wrinkles, says Shiseido

A new lipstick pigment combines vivid shine whilst helping to diminish the appearance of lip lines and wrinkles, says manufacturer Shiseido.

According to the Japan-based company this is the first time these two features have been combined in the same product.

The pigment has been developed in response to a consumer survey conducted by the company in April 2008.

Results from the survey suggested that disguising fine lines and wrinkles in the lips was particularly important to consumers, in addition to vivid color and shine.

Particle shape affects light reflection

In the past manufacturers have used a plate-like shape pigment if they want to achieve maximum shine, explained Shiseido, due to the way the particle reflects light.

However, such a pigment can emphasize the difference in brightness of an uneven surface, making lines and wrinkles even more noticeable.

In contrast, spherical pigments are often used to disguise fine lines and wrinkles in products such as foundations, but the oil content of a lipstick can make these hard to use.

Shiseido argues that it has solved this problem by creating a spherical pearlizing agent with a two-layer structure consisting of a spherical powder of uniform particle size at the core, surrounded by a layer of pearlizing particles.

This, according to the company, will allow the pigment to both disguise the wrinkles and create a vivid shine – two of the most important qualities for consumers.

The new spherical pearl luster pigment will be incorporated into the company’s future lipstick products.

Hotter Lips

Turn old into new! Instead of buying all new lipsticks, layer your existing shades to create fun fall options. Combine brown and pink to make a sultry rose, red and purple for plum, and coral and red for fuchsia.

Make your red lipstick racier. Apply pressed powder in between coats to intensify your everyday red lipstick. “The powder pulls out the oil from the lipstick, so you’re left with a deep, matte stain, which is exactly the kind of effect you want right now,” says Chantel Miller, MAC senior makeup artist. Outline your pucker with a brow pencil. To prevent your bold lip color from creeping past the corners, “rim your mouth with a flesh-colored brow pencil — its waxy formula is great at preventing any smudging,” says Matin, Neutrogena cosmetic-science expert.

Pat foundation over your lips. The nude, mod lip is the balance to this season’s rich colors. You don’t even need any lipstick to pull it off. “Just dip a makeup sponge in foundation, press it to your lips, and let it dry for a few seconds,” says Shane Paish, Dior global makeup adviser. “Finish it off with a clear lip gloss to add some shine, and you’re good to go.” Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in Tulle, $24.50, is great for this trick.

LIPS LURE
Luscious Lips:
Should not be overly, shiny, shimmery or glossy. Darker colours and matte textures look better on thick full lips. Avoid a dark outline and pale lipstick.

Thin Lips:
The lips should be lined with a pencil in the same shade as the lipstick by drawing on the outer edge of the lips. Use light colours, shiny, metallic and glossy textures to make the lips look large.

TIPS

• Daub highlighters on the curve of the top of your lips.
• To get a perfect pout, if your lips are thin, smear a lighter shade in the center. Choose shimmery shades to glam up.
• To ensure that the lipsticks does not get eaten up soon, apply a tiny amount of foundation on your lips.
