The Best Hair trends of 2008

ew Year’s Day is just around the corner and it is the perfect time to decide which of 2008’s trends to keep and which ones to throw away. Trends in cosmetics, skin care, dieting, exercising, fashion, and jewelry are always changing. While some of them may find their way onto the list of "classics" in the future, others will fall the way side as they well should. Here are my picks for the best and the worst hair and cosmetic trends this year.

HAIR TRENDS

Best hair color choicePerfect 10 by Clariol. Cutting down the amount of processing time for hair color means healthier locks.

Worst hair color choiceUsing at home products to lighten hair from black to blonde. Drastic changes should involve a professional colorist.

Best hair product choice Ojon. This unique hair product comes from the rain forests of Central America; the land of the Tawira "people of beautiful hair." Ojon delivers healthier, shinier, and more luxurious hair.

Worst hair product choiceStiff hair gels that glue the style into place; allowing no natural hair movement.

Best hair cut The bob. Whether it is short or shoulder length, straight or asymmetrical, the bob cut looks sleek and sexy while allowing the hair natural movement.

Worst hair cutThe mullet. Yes, that’s right. Some people attempted to bring back the tacky hairstyle. Thankfully, it only lasted at 10 minutes.

Best hairstyleNone. 2008 was the year of hair. It was an anything goes year and people were better for it. Instead of worrying about getting the latest trendy style, people focused on what looked best on them. The result was a pretty good year for hair.

Worst hairstyle The just got out of bed look. It is one thing to go for a natural looking style, but it is quite another to look like a brush hasn’t been used in 10 years.

BEST OVERALL HAIR TRENDHealthy hair. Any good cut and style will look better if the hair is in good shape to begin with.

Ingredients: Earth

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH/ (dahy-at-uh-mahyt-uhs urth)/n./ 1. A dirtlike substance made from the finely ground fossils of prehistoric algae; n./ 2. Commonly used as a deterrent for household and garden insect pests, it is also a pure, nonabrasive alternative to aluminum-based microdermabrasion treatments, in which mineral-rich particles provide a soft, skin-buffing effect; e.g. “Kick-start your skincare regimen from the ground up, with a diatomaceous-earth face scrub that gently exfoliates dry, dead skin to reveal a more glowing complexion.”

Longer Lashes: Allergan's Latisse Approval

Allergan Inc., which makes Botox anti-wrinkle injections, said Friday that it has won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of it Latisse treatment designed to grow eyelashes “longer, thicker and darker.” The Irvine, Calif.-based firm said it will market the treatment in the U.S. by prescription only, beginning in the first quarter, and estimates that the global business could exceed $500 million annually.

Better lashes

A panel of government experts said that the glaucoma drug appears to be a safe and effective way to make eyelashes longer and fuller.

The agency's panel of outside eye and skin specialists voted unanimously that the drug's benefits outweigh its risks.

Freeze Frame

In this never-ending battle to stop the aging process that befalls us all, chicsters and chicettes have tried many a treatment. Who knew it could be as simple as three steps? Apparently, the smart people at Freeze 24-7. Real Simple

simple-cleansing-facial-wipes.jpg

Those of you who spend time across the pond will be happy to learn that Brit fave Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes are finally available at Duane Reades across the city! They’re handier than handy, non-drying, totally pH-balanced, alcohol free–and they even wipe away those pesky remnants of waterproof mascara. Plus, they’re only $5.99. We’ll take two!

Although the world now knows that President-elect Barack Obama will wear a Hart Schaffner Marx single-button, notch-lapel tuxedo for the evening festivities on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, that isn’t stopping others from lining up for the role of the administration’s First Tailor. So WWD asked men’s designers what they thought the new president should wear on his historic day.

With his lanky 6-foot, 2-inch frame, basketball-toned physique and sophisticated élan, Barack Obama has all the makings of a presidential style icon. With endless references to John F. Kennedy, designers are eagerly anticipating a return to Camelot-era glamour. But Obama has cultivated a style all his own. Kennedy was a product of the East Coast establishment and its preppy, New England aesthetic, while the President-elect has humbler roots — albeit roots that led him to Columbia and Harvard (Kennedy’s alma mater). Indeed, Obama’s style tends to reflect his political philosophy: practical but carefully considered; modern but accessible.

While JFK was said to be horrified when he appeared on the cover of GQ — he didn’t want to be seen as fashion-conscious — Obama has happily appeared on the covers of GQ, Esquire, Men’s Vogue and even Men’s Health (with all his clothes on). “This is the first president in a very long time that has a great body for clothing,” noted Duckie Brown’s Steven Cox and Daniel Silver. “Because that’s true, he can wear a more modern, slim silhouette.”

For Obama’s big day on Jan. 20 on the steps of the Capitol, designers mostly see him in updated yet classic sartorial style. Tommy Hilfiger envisions a patriotic color combo of a navy blue suit, white shirt and red tie, while Brioni advocates for the iconic three-piece gray flannel suit, with an Italian twist: double vents. Of course, with men’s wear, it’s all about the subtle details, so Paul Smith edges his suit lapels with black grosgrain tape, and Kenneth Cole suggests a Fifties-era — but chic again — tie bar. Come evening and the inaugural balls, Rag & Bone and Dsquared want Obama to don a full-on tuxedo with tails, but Savile Row’s Richard James really pushes the envelope with a sequined tuxedo jacket.

Interestingly, none of the designers include that pesky campaign issue in their sketches: an American flag lapel pin.

Courteney Cox in the 'Spotlight' for Avon

Courteney CoxAvon’s newest lady is Courteney Cox.

As part of the company’s strategy to continue growing its universe of celebrity and designer beauty alliances, Avon Products Inc. has announced a celebrity deal with Cox to be the face of the brand’s new women’s fragrance, Spotlight, which is set to launch in April.

“I’m happy to be a part of a company I’ve known my whole life,” said Cox, who has also been spokeswoman for the Kinerase skin care brand since March 2005. “Once I sat with them and learned more, they really blew me away with all the issues they support and the wonderful earnings opportunities they give women.”

The company signed first celebrity Derek Jeter in December 2006 to develop a men’s fragrance and skin care franchise. In more than two years, the company has signed on 10 deals. Some of these partnerships include Cynthia Rowley, Christian Lacroix, Jennifer Hudson and Patrick Dempsey, in addition to the Bond and Ironman franchises.

“As we look at our global fragrance portfolio, we wanted to diversify it from designers to celebrities and other franchises — all of which resonate with consumers in an emotional way,” said Tracy Haffner, vice president of global fragrance marketing for the direct seller. “This portfolio allows consumers to have a piece of designer and celebrity equities, and our plan is to continue growing in this way.”

Although terms of the partnership were not disclosed, Haffner said the new alliance is a “multiyear partnership.”

Industry sources estimated the fragrance could do between $10 million and $15 million in retail sales in its first year.

The April introduction will be followed by a global launch in summer via Avon’s 600,000 sales representatives in the U.S. and avon.com. Spotlight is described as a “fresh, oriental scent” inspired by the anticipation and excitement that can precede a big moment, said Haffner.

“Since I’m the kind of person that’s very loyal to a fragrance, having worn the same fragrance for 10 years, it’s nice to have a new one that I’m so proud of,” said Cox.

Created by Jean-Marc Chaillan of International Flavors & Fragrances, the scent is composed of top notes of shining silver, mandarin and Italian bergamot; middle notes of white freesia, tuberose absolute, and mimosa, and bottom notes of cashmere sandalwood, vetiver and white vanilla musk. It will retail for $22.50 for 1.7 oz.

“We wanted to capitalize on everyone’s fascination with being in the spotlight,” said Haffner. “Courteney has been in the spotlight ever since Bruce Springsteen pulled her onto stage as a little girl.”

Selected sales representatives will get a “preferred preview,” where they can place early orders for Spotlight. The company predicts that about 125,000 bottles will be distributed at this time.

The new scent will also be featured on the front cover of the Avon brochure starting in April and will include a two-page spread and scented page. Global advertising will include television and print ads starting in March.

Cox is getting ready to start shooting the pilot for a new comedy called “Cougartown,” where she plays a recent divorcée in her early 40s who has a 17-year-old son.

“They haven’t cast my son yet, but it’s empowering to play someone my age,” said Cox. “I’m glad I’m not playing a mom of a two-year-old — it’s much more interesting for me to act opposite a teen so I can have serious conversations. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back anymore now that I’m playing my true age.”

She also will appear in a film called “Bedtime Stories,” due out Dec. 25, and in the first three new episodes of Scrubs starting in January, she said.

Cheap but Chic Beauty Tricks

Seasonless Beauty Secrets

Some makeup tips are so good, they work any time of the year.

DEFINE YOUR BROWS. Use mascara to accentuate your shape and conceal any patchy gaps. We like working with Estée Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara, $19.50, since it has a mousselike texture.

CONCEAL DARK CIRCLES. Dust a thin line of taupe shadow under your lower lashes to offset any bluish under-eye circles, says Matin. “It’s an insider trick if you’re running low on concealer,” he adds. Try Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Duo in Iced Coffee, $8.49.

PLUMP YOUR LIPS. Sparkly eye shadow dabbed in the center of your lips gives the effect of fullness. “The shimmer draws light, so your lips seem to bow out naturally,” explains Miller. We like Laura Mercier Eye Colour in Primrose, $22.

GET GLOWY. Mix a pinch of metallic eye shadow into face lotion to warm your complexion. Our pick: American Beauty Copper Glow, $15.50.

What’s That Smell?

Beauty Junkie is definitely a fan of changing up signature scents from time to time but there are always a few classics we can never leave behind. Especially Prescriptives citrus-y scent, Calyx. It just makes us feel happy and energetic. P&G Aims to Make Beauty 'Ageless'

Ellen DeGeneres at the “Simply Ageless” shoot

Women are saying that their makeup, most notably their foundation, is making them look older, according to Procter & Gamble research, and the beauty giant’s latest innovation aims to address that.

“Simply Ageless was designed to make this issue go away,” said Esi Eggleston Bracey, vice president and general manager of Global Cosmetics at Procter & Gamble Beauty, in reference to a new cream foundation that combines Cover Girl and Olay technology.

Strong support on that point came from Ellen DeGeneres, the Emmy award-winning talk show host, actress and businesswoman, who is fronting the line as Cover Girl’s newest spokeswoman. DeGeneres said that when she was first contacted by the brand to be a Cover Girl, she thought “they must be looking for actress Ellen Barkin.”

But after DeGeneres thought about the offer for awhile, she said it made sense.

“I look at some of the other Cover Girls, like Drew [Barrymore], and she is smart and a businesswoman. So I see how I would make sense,” she said. DeGeneres was especially attracted because many of the Cover Girls have their own look. “Everyone [in Hollywood] is looking the same. They are rail thin and they have a certain look. We should celebrate our individuality,” she said.

Eggleston Bracey said DeGeneres was a natural choice because “at Cover Girl, we are involved with and inspired by women. Ellen is smart, funny and a multifaceted humanitarian who is also a businesswoman. What we are trying to do is reflect how dynamic [these women] are.”

DeGeneres, who is in her 50s, said she has been wearing Simply Ageless for a while on her show, and she can see a difference.

“A lot of makeup makes you look older — it falls into lines,” whereas Simply Ageless doesn’t, she said.

The new product’s breakthrough technology, Eggleston Bracey contended, allows the foundation to stay suspended over wrinkles in the skin. As it is applied, she said, the solid emulsion technology works with the skin’s temperature to transform the foundation from a cream to a liquid on contact. Users can see the blending of foundation and skin care by noticing the product’s swirl design.

“This is our way of showing that the skin care is in there,” said Eggleston Bracey.

This is the first time the Cover Girl and Olay brands have worked to co-create a solution for the consumer in a joint-branded product. However, the two aren’t strangers: Cover Girl partnered with Olay for the foundation Advanced Radiance several years back. That initiative included Olay ingredients in the formula of the foundation.

Simply Ageless is available in 15 shades and will retail for $13.99 in mass market retailers beginning this month.

According to data from Information Resources, Procter & Gamble holds the No. 2 spot in foundation, behind Revlon, with $166.8 million in sales, excluding Wal-Mart, for the most recent 52-week period ended Nov. 2.

DeGeneres will appear in print and TV ads for Simply Ageless beginning in January.

Instantly Alluring Eyes

Maximize your blush. Take a creamy rose blush, and apply it in a half-moon shape under your brow bone and over the tops of your cheekbones. “You’ll get a subtle sheen that draws attention to your eyes and makes your face glow,” explains Page.

Tap lip gloss under your brows. Sounds crazy, but patting on a soft, shimmery pink gloss helps highlight and lift your eyes, says Paish. Use a nonsticky formula (so your lashes don’t get stuck!), and blend in.

Wear contrasting eye-shadow colors. It’s a hot trend for fall, but just work with what you already have. Apply a bright, intense hue (like purple) on your upper lids, then drag a softer hue (pearly green) along your lower lash line, recommends Page.

Put bronzer on your lashes. Comb loose bronze powder through lashes instead of mascara. “You’ll get a subtle sparkle that’s so sexy for night since it catches the light,” says Miller. One swipe should do it — you don’t want any excess flakes to fall under your eyes. Try MAC Pigment Powders, $19.50.

Mineral Makeup Trend To Remain Hot in 2009

There’s been a question of longevity hanging over the future of mineral makeup, one of the hottest trends in the past five years. At least a partial answer may arrive in February, when Physicians Formula launches its first 100 percent mineral brightening bronzer and face brightener under the Mineral Wear franchise, which contains over 70 items for the face.

“There’s a profusion of mineral products, but since there are no regulations, people put a sticker saying that its mineral without adhering to the same ethics across the board,” said Ingrid Jackel, Physicians Formula’s chairman and chief executive officer. “It’s about working with beauty educators to help educate consumers about what mineral really means.”

Jackel said she saw an opportunity for long-wearing mineral makeup while studying the $170 million face makeup market in food, drug and mass stores. She also worries about market erosion caused by the flood of knockoffs.

“We’re progressively seeing more and more of these cheaper mineral products, but as consumers get more educated about the mineral category they will seek more credible mineral lines, like with what we saw with the green category,” said Jackel. “Our research showed that only 37 percent of women 18 and older are mineral users, so there is definitely an opportunity to target this age range.”

After launching three years ago, the Mineral Wear assortment includes 70 items for the face. The company wanted to introduce its first 100 percent mineral talc-free brightening bronzer and face brightener pressed powders under the Mineral Wear franchise. The proprietary formula is composed of light-reflecting micronized minerals such as pink, orange and white sapphire, green tourmaline and citrine. Designed to even out skin tone and add a radiant glow, the items will feature a new label to explain that the products are 100 percent mineral. Launching in February, both will be available in four shades and retail for $13.95.

“There’s a whole trend going towards radiance and brighter skin in mineral products — it’s about achieving a healthy overall glow without showing off fine lines and wrinkles,” said Jackel.

Capitalizing on the success of the tinted moisturizer launch in Organic Wear, Physicians Formula wanted to give consumers a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 under the Mineral Wear franchise to offer consumers a lightweight formula that still had mineral benefits. Available in four shades, the tinted moisturizer will retail for $12.95. The company will also introduce a talc-free mineral concentrate designed as a three-in-one “touch up tool,” acting as a concealer, powder and foundation.

Z: zzzz
The most important beauty tool is sleep, yet it is often the most ignored. We should be getting a good eight hours a night, but research shows that most women only average between six and seven. While we sleep, our skin renews itself, improving its texture and luminosity – nothing can give you that healthy glow like sleep can. Without enough shut eye your skin will become tired and dull looking, so make sure you include it on your beauty agenda everyday. Try to go to bed before 11pm as this is the time that our vital organs also start to regenerate themselves, and lie flat on your back – burrowing your face in your pillow can create mores lines!

Y: YSL Touche Eclat

When Yves Saint Laurent launched Touche Eclat, we’re sure he didn’t think he was about to revolutionize the make-up industry. But with one simple design, this little magic marker became THE must-have beauty product. Covering a multitude of sins, the Touche Eclat is every girl’s best friend, and far from being a seasonal buy, this one is for life!

Make-up Trend: Liquid Eyeliner

Makeup artist Cory Walia used Mark products on Deepika Padukone, including Liquid Eyeliner in Cleo (a rich, black shade) and four coats of plumping mascara to get her eye-enhancing look.

Experiment a little with liquid liner. If the line looks uneven or too heavy, top it with the eyeshadow you applied to your lids—flaws are hidden and the thickness of the black is toned down.

Erno Laszlo Ramps Up Online Present

Venerable skin care brand Erno Laszlo, which is named after the Hungarian dermatologist whose heyday was in the Sixties, is aiming for the Web in a big way.

The 81-year-old brand has launched a new e-commerce site, ernolaszlo.com, which is designed to be modern and more navigable to attract a younger audience.

“The old site was for hardcore users, but for new visitors coming on, it was difficult to navigate,” said Kim-Van Dang, a consultant for the New York-based brand. “We blew out the old site and started over.”

X: X-tra long lashes

Prepare to be bold with your lashes this season as they just got bigger than ever before. Use everything you can to pump up the volume – if you don’t or can’t do false lashes, then try just adding a few to your outer lash line to create a fuller look. Use everything you can to pump up the volume – try Dior Diorshow Mascara in Azure Blue which offers immediate volume and comes in a sassy navy blue. Or opt for Smashbox Bionic Mascara or Sephora Atomic Volume Mascara, to amp up your lashes.

Beauty Industry Confronts the Gathering Storm

Mulberry Bond Street StoreSharp pricing combined with razor-edged product and promotional ideas and good old-fashioned value are the main defenses being employed by beauty manufacturers caught in the vice of a merciless calendar and a doomsday economy.

Some industry executives speculated that the department store beauty business would finish the year down by as much as 3 percent to 4 percent. Another observer noted, “anywhere from minus two to plus three would be an outstanding result.”

John Demsey, a group president of the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc., who oversees the Lauder brand as well as MAC Cosmetics, observed, “So far it has been a tumultuous ride.”

Philips Bodygroom - The Gift of Fame, Fortune and Smooth Skin

You know what's funny? Man hair. Man body hair to be specific, and the removal of said hair to be excruciatingly specific.

At least that's what they're hoping at FunnyorDie.com, because they hate having to put out on the whole "die" thing.

Philips Norelco and FunnyorDie.com are co-sponsoring a contest to find the best "body grooming tales". The best two will be professionally produced and posted to the (already pretty darn funny) Shave Everywhere Web site.

"The Funny" can submit their hilarious hair stories until January 2nd at ShaveEverywhere.com, where visitors to the site will vote for their favorites. The ten most popular will be reviewed by the comedy brain trust at FunnyorDie, who will then select the two winners.

It's totally worth winning, too. The grand prize is an all-expenses paid trip on location in New York City to produce your script. One runner-up will score a selection of Philips consumer electronics and personal care products, which at the very least are useful, and at worst you can sell on eBay. Or give as late holiday gifts.

Do you have a funny (and perhaps unfortunately hairy) man friend? Give him a Bodygroom and ask to shoot some video when he uses it. At the very least you'll have a day/night to remember, and possibly a trip to NYC!

Cheap but Chic Beauty Tricks

Fresh, Flawless Skin

Rub face primer on your body. Skin-revealing dresses are still in for fall, so your legs and arms need to shine. The pros smooth on regular makeup primer. “Primers contain light diffusers that even out and enhance your skin tone,” explains Miller. “So it’s great to apply them anywhere you want to draw extra attention.” We like Lancôme’s La Base Pro, $42.

Swirl cherry lip gloss on your cheeks. Dick Page, artistic director for Shiseido the Makeup, recommends using bright red gloss or balm on your apples to enhance your natural glow. “You can layer on more or less to get the exact level of rosiness that you want,” he says. Try Nivea’s Cherry Tinted Lip Care, $2.99.

Trade bronzer for blush. To get the chiseled cheekbones from the catwalks, sweep bronzer (instead of powder blush) onto the hollows of the cheeks. “This creates shadows and depth so your cheekbones stand out more,” notes Paish. You also can use a darker shade of powder that’s left over from summer.

“Paint” on your foundation. Models looked especially airbrushed on the fall runways. To get the look: Use a makeup brush to put on liquid foundation. “The bristles evenly distribute the product, so you get this soft veil of coverage,” says Miller. When going over tricky areas (like under the eyes or around the nose), squeeze the tip to flatten the edge to smooth out lines. Every few days, remember to wash your brush with shampoo to remove buildup.

Beauty Dictionary: A to Z for Fall 2008 - "V"

V: Vivid colors

Eyes continue their playful reign with saturated hues of violet, orange and peacock blue as seen at Vivienne Westwood. Brown eyes work best with burnt oranges and gold while blue gleam in cobalt and plum. If you are going for an extra bold look for the eyes, team it with a neutral face for more impact. NARS has fabulous matte and shimmer duos in Jezebel and Rated R, for an instant flash of color.

L'Oréal Cutbacks Hitting U.S. Unit

L’Oréal USA has said it will “be implementing certain restructuring initiatives,” resulting in the elimination of about 500 jobs out of a workforce of 10,500 full- and part-time positions for the U.S. subsidiary of the French beauty giant.

That amounts to roughly 4.8 percent of the workforce that will be cut between now and the first half of next year. In a statement, L’Oréal USA said, “the company believes that acting now to consolidate functions and streamline efficiencies will both strengthen its position in the face of the current difficult economic climate, and help it to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Cheap but Chic Beauty Tricks

Hotter Lips

Turn old into new! Instead of buying all new lipsticks, layer your existing shades to create fun fall options. Combine brown and pink to make a sultry rose, red and purple for plum, and coral and red for fuchsia.

Make your red lipstick racier. Apply pressed powder in between coats to intensify your everyday red lipstick. “The powder pulls out the oil from the lipstick, so you’re left with a deep, matte stain, which is exactly the kind of effect you want right now,” says Chantel Miller, MAC senior makeup artist. Her pick: MAC Select Sheer/ Pressed Powder, $21.

Outline your pucker with a brow pencil. To prevent your bold lip color from creeping past the corners, “rim your mouth with a flesh-colored brow pencil — its waxy formula is great at preventing any smudging,” says Matin, Neutrogena cosmetic-science expert.

Pat foundation over your lips. The nude, mod lip is the balance to this season’s rich colors. You don’t even need any lipstick to pull it off. “Just dip a makeup sponge in foundation, press it to your lips, and let it dry for a few seconds,” says Shane Paish, Dior global makeup adviser. “Finish it off with a clear lip gloss to add some shine, and you’re good to go.” Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in Tulle, $24.50, is great for this trick.

Hot holiday dresses for any party

If there's one time of year that begs for a new outfit, it's the holidays. Pull off this season's fabulous formal trends with tips from an expert.

Believe it or not, it's that time of year again. It's the time of year to dust off your dancing shoes and prepare for another festive season. If you're in the market to shop for something new to wear to all your holiday events, then heed our helpful advice before you hit the shops. Robin Keeler, fashion director at Toronto's Yorkdale Shopping Centre, offers up helpful tips for finding the perfect holiday dress.

"Designers are currently having a love affair with dresses," says Keeler. And for every body type, she says, there is a flattering dress. "A fitted garment reveals the form of the body while loose garments disguise the shape underneath." But no matter what, nothing makes a dress look richer than a great fit.

The styles
This year, dresses remain strong, says Keeler. The looks are classic and confident, harkening back to a time gone by. Drawing inspiration from dresses from the ‘50s and ‘60s, this season's dresses have a retro flair but are updated with modern touches, details and embellishments. "Styles are curve-conscious and ultra-feminine," says Keeler. "Think fuller skirts, classic lines, refined."

The trends
According to Keeler, short, knee-, midcalf- and full-length dresses are all on trend this season. "The most popular length will be just above or just below the knee," she says. "This length seems to complement the majority of women. However dresses will go from the floor right up to mid thigh."

Popular fabrics run the gamut from silk and satin to chiffon, crepe and organza -- the usual holiday suspects. And when it comes to colour, Keeler says elegant jewel tones, shimmering metallics and claret red will all dominate, however black is still a party favourite.

The black dress
The versatile black dress is a holiday classic. "Day to night, the little black dress can be classic, elegant, sleek, sexy and slimming," says Keeler. But before you decide on any old black outfit, she offers the following advice:

-Look for details that flatter your body, such as waist details to optimize an hourglass shape, and pick a length around the knee for the most versatile look.

-Keep the legs bare or wear very sheer hose for the dressiest look.

-The little black dress carries accessories well so don't be afraid to embellish.

-The black dress is the perfect choice when you don't know what to wear or can't decide!

Holiday dresses: 7 dos and don'ts
Robin Keeler offers seven tips to help you find the party dress that's just right for you and how to wear it with style.

Do try on lots of different styles, cuts, lengths, colours and fabrics so you get a better idea of what looks good on you before you buy.

When shopping for a dress, do take along the appropriate underwear and shoes for trying on different clothes. Every dress requires the right underwear, so invest in it if you don't own it.

Do go easy when puttin' on the glitz -- (sparkle, shimmer, glitter, and shine). Know when enough is enough. One piece will usually do the trick.

Do consider body shapers. They are a great way to go if you want to have a smooth, jiggle-free look.

If you are unsure about going with something trendy, do try to find a dress that reflects classic, timeless elegance. Remember that you'll have to look at photos of yourself in the dress for years to come.

Do the cost-per-wear formula if you want to stay on budget: How much is the dress, plus projected dry cleaning costs, divided by how many times you will wear it in a year? Is this a good buy for you?

Do accessorize with the latest:
-Shoes: strapped sandals with jewels or velvet pumps
-Bag: a velvet, sparkle or satin clutch
-Jewelry: the chandelier earring, bejeweled necklaces and large jeweled bangle bracelets

Beauty Dictionary: A to Z for Fall 2008 - "R"

R: Red siren

Go for vampy siren this fall and winter with full red lips to rival Angelina Jolie. “Start by exfoliating your lips,” says Dina Mikiya, “followed by a lip treatment to nourish and condition. I love Pixi Rose Lip Treat, which is a lip plumper and comes with a delicious rose extract. Next, line your lips with a liner – if you want to make them bigger, use the liner outside your natural lip line. All that’s left to do is finish with your favorite red lipstick!” We love Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Clarins Red

The Best Makeup trends of 2008

MAKEUP TRENDS - For on the go...(only)

Best foundation choice for the "Amatuer" Pure mineral foundations like Raw Minerals, Sheer Cover, or Bare Minerals. They provide a sheer, more natural look without all the chemicals, additives, and preservatives that most foundations have.

Worst foundation choice (when considering weight) – Cake or stick makeup. These choices may work well for women who have blemishes to hide but for the average woman they are just too heavy.

Best blush choiceRevlon’s Pinch Me blush gel. This sheer liquid allows women to control the amount of color added. Like its name implies, the color looks natural, just like the cheeks were just pinched.

Worst blush choice Any type of cake or stick blushes. They go on too heavy and look anything but natural.

Best mascaraAlmay One Coat. This tried and true mascara out performs most others on the market; old or new.

Worst mascaraRevlon’s 3D Mascara. This one promises to make lashes longer, fuller, and thicker. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to its claims.

Best lip color choiceBare Escentuals Buxom Lips. Women have longed for a lip color that plumps, delivers beautiful color, and leaves behind a beautiful glossy finish. Bare Escentuals answered their prayers with Buxom Lips. It isn’t just good. It’s sensational!

Worst lip color choice Black lipstick. It’s okay for teens; however...you gotta be able to pull this off...

BEST OVERALL MAKEUP TREND Focusing on one aspect of the face. This year, women were advised to play up the eyes or the lips; not both at the same time. Women should always play to their strengths and this trend reinforced that premise.

Keep in mind that best and worst choices are somewhat subjective. Products work differently on various women. This list was composed from a focus group of women between the ages of 16 and 73 with different colors, types, and textures of hair and skin.

Stayed tuned for subsequent articles that cover the best and the worst trends in skin care, dieting, exercising, jewelry and fashion.

Q: Question and Answers
The best advice anyone could ever give a budding make-up or skincare junkie is to ask questions. Asking questions can educate a person as well as tell people how to use a certain product correctly. Many sites offer beauty advice, as well as my blog offers many tips, and I personally answer all the comments and questions that are addressed on this blog.

Beauty Dictionary: A to Z for Fall 2008 - "P"

P: Purple
Dior Fall 2008
Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta and Dior were all sporting ‘the’ beauty color of the season: purple. A great transitional color between seasons, purple is a sultry shade that wraps up autumn. Give blue eyes a flash of pop for the party season ahead and wash a purple shimmer over the lids right up to the brow. Add a deeper purple across the lids, and finish with a dark plum liner across the top lid. For lips, opt for an allover matte pout, but keep the rest of face neutral. Try Sephora Colorful Eye Shadow Pour De Prunes its varying purple shades, and M.A.C Technakohl Liner in Purple Dash, to finish.

TS Q & A With Amy Strozzi - Part 3:

Borrowed from the TalkingShopping.com team.

Alright girls, it's the moment you've all been waiting for...the AMAZING finale of our super-exclusive interview with Sarah Palin's campaign trail makeup artist, Amy Strozzi!

In this installment of our Q & A with the celebrity and Emmy-nominated makeup artist, Amy dishes on all of the details of which brands and what products she used on Gov. Palin and oh-so-much more! Amy let us in on all of the secret specifics, so you can run out and get that flawless glow Gov. Palin was so frequently sporting in her many public appearances! And here it is, the final part of our JUICY interview with Amy Strozzi...

TS Q & A With Amy Strozzi - Part 3:

TS: Were the brands that you used specifically your favorites or did Governor Palin have a preference and ask you to use specific brands?

AS: We did use her personal foundation, Revlon Age Defying Makeup with Botafirm in Medium Beige (pictured; $13.99 at Drugstore.com) as part of her regimen. I just mixed in the GA foundation to give better coverage for television. Mostly, she let me do my thing.

TS: Within those brands, which products did you use the most? Specifically, which products did you use from which brands?

AS: My favorite things to use on the Gov's eyes were Chanel eye shadow quads in Variations (a staple) and Beiges de Chanel. When I wanted a more golden look, I used MAC single shadows in Amber Lights and Romp. Sephora Slim Eye Pencils in Dark Brown, Chocolate Brown, and Black. I loved MAC blush in Gingerly, and Cubic. Chanel blush (pictured below; $42 at Nordstrom) in Horizon, a gorgeous peach and Narcisse, a really soft pink, were both also used frequently. Her lip liner was an automatic L'Oreal pencil in Nudes, which we covered the lip with and then put a gloss over it in a color that I'm only revealing on my blog!

TS: When you met Governor Palin, did you come up with a certain "look" you thought she should have during the campaign trail, or was it a simple color matching process with her skin tone, etc.?

AS: I actually watched various news shows to see what was the standard vibe throughout politics, since it's an arena much different than celebrity or fashion. Plus, this woman was running for an extremely important office, so we had to walk a fine line with keeping her looking beautiful and fresh, but also appropriate for a White House candidate. There were probably three or four core looks I stuck with, using different color combinations to mix it up.

Missed the rest of Amy's exclusive Sarah Palin interview? Check out Part 1 and Part 2:

TS: Which brand(s) of cosmetics did you use when doing Governor Palin's makeup?

AS: I used various brands, as I usually do... in this case, I used a lot of Chanel and MAC as far as eye shadows and blushes...

TS: Have you come to favor one or two specific brands during your days as a makeup artist? If so, why?

AS: I love Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundations; they were originally formulated by Pat McGrath, makeup guru, and give an amazing coverage without being heavy. I also love Chanel eye shadows and MAC cream cheek colors. I probably have bits and pieces from every makeup line out there, whether it's found in a drugstore or Saks Fifth Avenue. L'Oreal Voluminous mascara (pictured; $7.60 at L'Oreal) in Carbon Black is a staple in my kit.

TS: Did you use the same brands on Governor Palin throughout the whole campaign for the most part, or did you mix it up a little?!

AS: I did generally use the same brands, mainly because there was very little time to find a makeup store and pick up anything new. Plus, I was very limited as to how much I could carry; it was a good exercise in creativity. I did switch up some techniques throughout though, and there was a moment where we switched to oil free face powder when the days began to get increasing long.

TS: If Sarah had to pick a favorite product that you used on her, which product and color do you think she would pick?

AS: I remember once, when I was doing a fun gold eye on her with two tones, she said, "I love how you do those eyes Amy..." I think it's difficult for women who wear glasses to find a way of wearing eye shadow that works for them...I wore glasses my whole life, so I have tricks. Also, she got very accustomed to the individual lashes I would put on her every morning....which, unfortunately are not so easy to do yourself!

Right: M.A.C. just released a new gold shadow color, the Brushed Metal-X Shadow in Gold Spice; $16.50 at M.A.C. Great for gold eyes!

Below: TS also loves Bobbi Brown's new Copper diamond Shimmer Brick to blend a few different shades of gold on the eyes and face; $40 at Bobbi Brown.

TS: Is Governor Palin's skin just naturally flawless (as it appears on TV), and the makeup was simply used to highlight her natural beauty, or did having her makeup done really change the look of her face?

AS: I have said this to just about everyone I speak to...the Governor's skin is the most beautiful skin I have ever worked with. Of course, makeup always helps to create an even canvas, but the condition of her skin was flawless. I attribute it to the clean Alaskan air, lots of fresh fish and protein, and a good fitness regime.

TS: Did Sarah seem to enjoy having her makeup done and learn a lot about how to properly apply makeup, or was she more apprehensive about the makeup process?

AS: She was definitely a bit apprehensive at first, which I think is normal for any woman who is used to doing everything for themselves, and then suddenly having a million people around you doing everything for you. The whole point of having so much assistance on the trail is to leave the candidate as free as possible to have meetings, do their reading, and tend to more official business.

Beauty Dictionary: A to Z for Fall 2008 - "O"

O: Overnight creams
Clarins Night Creams
Using an overnight cream is more important that using your day cream. Night creams are proven to be more effective as they can get on with the job at hand, which is why it is also important to choose a night cream that targets your ‘troubled’ spots. Whether it’s anti-aging, rejuvenation, hydration or helping with pigmentation, your skin will benefit more from using a ‘specific’ night cream than it will using a ‘specific’ day cream. For daytime protection, try using a good sunblock instead, such as Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 55 PA+++ . Go to a Clarins counter and choose from five different night creams: Bright Plus HP Repairing Brightening Night Cream, Extra-Firming Night Cream "Special" for Dry Skin, Extra-Firming Night Cream for All Skin Types, Gentle Night Cream, Line Prevention Multi-Active Night Cream.

It’s an excellent lightweight base for flawless skin.”

4 Weeks to Longer Lashes and Thicker Brows

Prostaglandins — they’ve been doing the info-mercial circuit lately, getting in their 15 minutes of lash blasting fame, and RapidLash Eyelash Renewal Serum ($50) is the product du jour!

RapidLash makes some very bold claims…

Potent Polypeptides help amplify the length, thickness and volume! Powerful Polypeptides provide effective protection against breakage and naturally support longer, stronger more voluminous lashes.

Vital proteins and vitamins help replenish and fortify! Panthenol and rich minerals join forces to help replenish and rejuvenate lashes with essential proteins and vitamins that provide strength, shine and enhance lashes.

Moisturizing and rejuvenating agents help add shine and flexibility! Unique moisturizing agents provide extreme hydration to lashes by locking in moisture while improving elasticity and durability.

The product contains bioengineered octa/copper/oligo peptides, an “effective combination of amino acids,” according to CEO Robert Trow, to help “amplify volume by strengthening and rejuvenating” lashes and brows, and isopropyl cloprostenate, a fatty acid (LOL!) derivative, to help “promote cell regeneration.”
