Wearing Shimmer

This New Year's Eve, I'm planning on doing a super low-key gathering with some friends since I have to I have to catch a flight the next day. Plane ride plus hangover? No thanks. It is the new year after all, and that means it's a shimmer celebration.

Just like you'll be sure to "know when to say when" when it comes to boozy drinks tonight, you'll know "when to say when" when it comes to the sparkly goodness of shimmer with my tips below. Keep in mind that rules are meant to be broken, and makeup should always be expressive. But, for the most flattering look — pick one (two, tops) feature to add shimmer to, such as lips, eyes, cheeks, body, and/or complexion, and roll with it.

  • Shimmer or glitter?: Glitter is the more amped-up version of shimmer. While glitter is OK in small, small doses — like a sweep of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Liner ($18) paired with a soft eyeshadow — it can look too Hot Topic when heavily applied.
  • Family jewels: When wearing sparkly cosmetics, keep your jewelry to a minimum. You don't want your fabulous face competing with your ginormous sparkly earrings.
  • Body glow: For some overall brightening, apply a shimmering lotion to your arms, legs, and/or décolleté. Try Jergens Soft Shimmer Skin Radiance Moisturizer ($5.12). You can also make your own by mixing a shimmery product with your body cream.
Bronzed goddess: Sweep a shimmering bronzer on your forehead, cheeks, and jawline in a "3" motion for a sexy, healthy glow. Try Jane Shimmering Powder ($4.19), and then add a pop of blush on the apples of your cheeks.
  • Highlight: To brighten up your face, apply a highlighter on the inner corners of the eyes, the upper cheekbones, and the brow bone. I like Aveda Shimmer Accents ($21.50), which are light enough to mix with your foundation or moisturizer.
  • Nail it: Butter London's Lacquer Duo Holiday Set ($20) has just the right amount of holiday pizazz.
  • Shiny lips: If you're not feeling shimmer on the body or face, why not apply a some sparkly gloss on top of your lipstick? Try Stila Silk Shimmer Gloss ($22), which is inspired by its famous eyeshadow shade, Kitten. Me-ow.

Keep Your New Year's Makeup Rockin' After the Ball Drops

On New Year's Eve, you're likely to go out early while wanting to look your foxiest when midnight rolls around. Instead of constantly running to the bathroom for touchups and carrying a whole case of makeup in your purse, why not make things easier on yourself with a bit of preparty prep? These six tips, especially used together, will give you makeup that stays put no matter how much moving you do, and they certainly beat drunkenly trying to reapply your winged eyeliner in bad nightclub bathroom lighting (oh yeah, we've all been there). So to find out how to get it right and keep it going, just read more.

 * Use primer. I know this may not be the first product you think about when you're considering your New Year's look, but it makes a world of difference. I love Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17). I wore it under my chunky metallic duo tone shadow at the Lady Gaga concert, where I danced around, sweated, and otherwise behaved badly for four hours, then came home to find it all still perfectly in place. On the inexpensive end, I also hear good things about people using Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel ($8) as a foundation and eye shadow primer. I know it sounds a little gross, but people say it's great, and it contains dimethicone, which is the primary ingredient in most high-end primers.

* Wear bright colors or go totally nude. Extremely bright color wears well over the course of a night, because even though it fades, you still get plenty of pop. Red lipstick that you also like when it's semisheer is especially good. Your other best option is to go with nudes, so that your look only changes subtly as it fades.

* Try lip and cheek stains. Benefit's Posietint ($28) is a pretty pink that stays on cheeks forever.

* Focus on your eyes. You'll almost certainly be drinking and eating, so your lipstick is going to fade significantly. A well-drawn cat eye done in waterproof liquid liner will look gorgeous and sexy all evening.

* Curl your lashes and try a tubular mascara, like Imju Fiberwig ($24). Tubular formulas don't flake like traditional mascara, meaning that you don't accumulate undereye mascara smudges at the end of the evening.

* Use a fixative spray on top of your makeup, like ModelCo Beauty Fix Airbrush Face ($28), which makes all your makeup water resistant. If you've put primer on under and fixative on over, your makeup shouldn't budge all evening.

Flawless Foundation...

Taking care of your skin is the first step in creating that glowing, healthy-from-within look, but some strategically placed makeup doesn't hurt, either. Do you ever feel like your foundation looks fake, or just isn't giving you the effect you're wanting to achieve? Get my tips to get flawless foundation when you read more.

  1. Concealing: Choose a creamy, easy-to-blend formulation in a shade lighter than your skin tone, and look for something with a yellowish undertone to help neutralize the purple tones common in undereye circles. Next, pat the concealer into the skin, allow the product to dry, and repeat if you still need coverage. For some great options, check out MAC and Benefit, the most popular of your favorite concealers of 2009. Tip: For pimples, choose a coverup that's the same shade as your skin.
  2. Foundation selection tips: If you're not sure what color is appropriate for your skin tone, do a stripe test by applying three (or more) swipes of foundation on your cheek. The one that disappears is your shade. If you've got oily skin, choose a powder-based or oil-free liquid foundation, like Stila Natural Finish Oil-Free Makeup ($38). For dry skin, opt for a mousse, liquid foundation, or tinted moisturizer formulation, like Stila Sheer Tinted Moisturizer ($34).
  3. The application: Dot your foundation on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Using a sponge, begin at the center and work outward, making sure that you're blending downward so that any peach fuzz you might have lies flat. Tip: For more coverage, use a dry sponge and a stippling motion. For less coverage, use a wet sponge with long, smooth strokes.
  4. The finish: To keep your flawless application from going south, simply allow your foundation to dry, and then lightly blot with a tissue. Next, use a yellow-based powder on the t-zone to set your makeup and reduce shine.

Product Review: Nature's Cure Anti-Acne Papaya Skin Care System

I'm always a little leery of anti-acne products, because let's face it — some almost do the reverse of quelling the breakout situation. With that said, I realize the effectiveness of any anti-acne product varies so much by individual, and for me, I think I've hit the jackpot with this one (and I hope it works for you, too).

Nature's Cure Anti-Acne Papaya Skin Care System ($19.99) comes as a three-product package. The main acne-fighting ingredients are salicylic acid and papaya enzymes, known for their exfoliating and antibacterial properties. The kit includes:

  • Acne-Clearing Papaya Cleanser — It's a little more liquidy and low foamy than I am used to, but it did the trick.
  • Pore-Perfecting Papaya Toner — Removed pretty much all the makeup the cleanser may have missed without a stinging, burning, or "mediciney" feel.
  • Acne-Repairing Papaya Moisturizer — Super-light feeling, and a little goes a long way. It also wore really well under foundation.
  • Overall, this skin care system worked wonders to keep my acne problems in check — without producing dry, flaky skin. At first I was a little unsure about the somewhat sweet, musky scent (mostly papaya), but it grew on me with regular usage. And since the results were so stellar, a little stink is acceptable in this case.

Other bonuses? Soft skin, smoothness, no tie-dyed sheets, and reasonably priced — heck, I'll pay anything to put a halt to the breakouts, but when it comes at such a bargain price, woohoo, I say!

How-To: Treat Acne Scars

To round out my acne series, I am going to give you some treatment options for healing your skin and reducing scarring once you've got your acne under control. Even mild acne can leave minor scarring, and for those of you who have battled moderate or severe acne, the scarring can be a lot worse.

It is common for acne lesions to leave a red or elevated mark behind once they're healed. This usually goes away within six to 12 months. Severe lesions can leave marks that persist after a year, and these are considered "permanent" scars. Luckily, there are things you can do to help minimize, and in some cases eliminate, this scarring. For treatment suggestions, read more.

  • Wear sunscreen By now you are probably starting to think that I probably drizzle sunscreen on my breakfast toast, since I am so raving mad about it. But the fact is that UV exposure from the sun not only damages skin further, but it also delays the healing process of your skin. That means scars stick around longer and may not heal at all with prologued sun exposure. So always always cover your scars with sunscreen, or better yet, wear a cute hat and stay out of the sun altogether.
  • Try a retinoid: A retinoid is a topical vitamin A treatment, such as Retin-A. When applied to the surface of the skin, Vitamin A speeds up cellular regeneration and helps skin renew itself more effectively, which can help scars heal more quickly and smoothly.
  • AHAs and BHAs: Alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids are a more mild skin-rejuvenating option than a retinoid. Both work by sloughing off dead or damaged skin on the surface of your face, encouraging new, fresh skin to appear. The major difference between the two is that beta hydroxy acids are oil soluble, which means they can penetrate deeper into clogged pores to actually clear up sebum. If you are still struggling with breakouts, a beta hydroxy acid might be the way to go. Otherwise, stick with an alpha hydroxy acid since it is significantly less drying.
  • Injectable fillers: Facial fillers like collagen can smooth out deep pitted acne scars, but only temporarily. Still, it is less expensive than surgical removal of scars, and if you only have a couple deep scars, this will smooth them out completely.
  • Surgical removal: It might sound strange that you can eliminate a scar by creating a new one, but in fact, you can. Pitted scars can be removed by what is called a "punch excision." With this procedure, a doctor uses a small tool that resembles a hole puncher, punches out the acne scar, and gently sutures the surrounding skin together. When it heals, the resulting scar usually disappears completely, or is significantly less noticeable than the acne scar.
  • Laser Resurfacing: Laser resurfacing works by essentially burning your top layers of skin down to a certain level, depending on the depth and severity of your scars. The skin then regenerates over the area of the scar, or in some cases, the entire face, and the scar is removed completely. Laser resurfacing can be very painful, so post-treatment skin needs to be cared for with extreme caution, as it is extremely fragile and susceptible to damage. Sunbathing is not an option, and you will probably not be going in public for a couple of weeks while your face heals. The upside is that the effects are permanent, so you don't need to have the process repeated as long as your acne stays away.

Can a Natural Acne Cure Work? Let's Find Out.

Ten years ago, eco-friendly cosmetics were difficult to track down, and the ones you could find were often just so-so. Times have changed, and as the number of natural beauty treatments grows, so does their effectiveness. So with the launch of Dermify ($19.95-39.95), a new natural anti-acne treatment, I was curious to see if it could tackle the zit factory that is my chin.

Dermify uses organic plant extracts and other natural ingredients, and it's free of parabens, soaps, sulfates, petrochemicals — and traditional acne fighters such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Its active ingredient is sulfur, which encourages skin to lose its dead skin cells. I've been using Dermify for just over a month, so for my thoughts, keep reading.

There isn't any elaborate process with this product. Instead, you're supposed to wash your face with the clay-based cleanser for one minute before washing it off. Then, once to three times a week, you use a thin layer of it as a mask.

I've never used a clay-based cleanser, so washing with Dermify was a new experience. I like how it very gently exfoliates without feeling abrasive at all. The only drawback is that, as is the case with just about any treatment with sulfur, it gives off a mild sulfuric scent. It doesn't smell awful, but it isn't flowery like a lot of cleansers, either. After washing, my face generally feels clean, smooth, and ever-so-slightly slightly dry — just enough to require a light moisturizer. (It's important to rinse the heck out of your face, though, and to keep the cleanser away from the delicate eye area.) When used as a mask, Dermify temporarily made my face red, but I definitely saw cleaner pores afterward. Both as a mask and a cleanser, a little goes a long way.

After using Dermify for the last month, I'm pleased to report fewer breakouts. The pimples that do spring up are smaller, and most impressively, the world's biggest blob of cystic acne has been slowly but surely shrinking from my chin. (Full disclosure: I've also eliminated dairy from my diet, so that may have an effect, too.) Aside from mild redness with the mask, my skin hasn't been irritated, overly dry, or otherwise "angry" like it can be when treated with benzoyl peroxide. Overall, I like using an effective product that isn't packed with synthetic chemicals. If you've been disappointed by "green" skin care that hasn't improved your acne, Dermify might be worth a try.

Scientists Find a Way to Take the Stink Out of Hair Dye

One major complaint about hair dye is the off-putting smell, and you can attribute that mostly to the presence of ammonia, a necessary ingredient that enables color to penetrate into the hair shaft. Since the invention of the first commercial hair color in 1909, hair dye has remained fairly unchanged, but now scientists at L’Oréal have discovered a way to take the stink out by use of an odorless substance called monoethanolamine (MEA).

MEA is nothing new. It's actually already used in non-ammonia hair dye formulations to darken hair within a level, but hasn't been strong enough to lighten the hair or cover gray — until now. That's thanks to the addition of a color-boosting mineral oil gel to the MEA, a formulation that L’Oréal has dubbed "Innovation No Ammonia" (INOA). "I can't say that replacing ammonia-based dyes with those containing monoethanolamine is an improvement for public health, though it will cut down on the noxious odor," the Environmental Working Group's Rebecca Sutton told Scientific American. L’Oréal, however, claims that the INOA leaves the hair in better condition since it doesn't compromise the integrity of the hair quite as much as traditional hair dye. Eventually we'll be seeing the product for at-home use, but first expect to find the hair color in salons early next year. Are you pumped for non-stinky color, or is safety still an issue?

Kate Moss to add makeup to her empire?

Kate Moss makeup.jpg

There is little women won't by if it comes with the possibility of nabbing a tiny little bit of Kate Moss's iconic style. The popularity of her line for Topshop, her three perfumes, and her campaign for Coty's Rimmel London come to mind. But, as seems to be Kate's way, she seems to be tired of hawking someone else's makeup and might want to hawk her own.

"I've been modeling for 20 years," she told WWD, estimating that she has spent six years in makeup chairs. "Somebody can do my makeup; I don't even have to look in a mirror to know what it looks like because I just know by what it feels like on my face."

The line would likely be with Rimmel, as Coty also holds the licenses to Moss's fragrances.

15 Ultimate Age Erasers for Guys

Looks. Energy. Health. Time erodes them all, unless you follow these simple instructions to slow the clock

15 Ultimate Age Erasers

Think there's no answer to time's toll? Well, you're right. If you don't lift a finger, time will take everything you have. But nearly 70 percent of aging factors actually fall within your control. "People just accept that they're going to start looking and feeling older, but they really don't have to," says Steven Austad, Ph.D., an expert on aging at the University of Texas at San Antonio. You can outrun Father Time — at least for a while. Here's an arsenal of age-defying weapons — distilled from experts and visits to key "fountain of youth" labs — that will help you look, feel, and stay in your prime.

Look Younger
A man typically greets those first wrinkles with an anxious frown, which in turn produces more wrinkles. Indeed, the effects of age first show up on our faces, especially around the eyes. In a recent study in Ophthalmology, 47 young adults had their eye movements tracked as researchers presented them with images of older adults. When asked to determine the ages of the people in the photos, the study participants focused on the eye region, particularly the brow and lower lids. If you want to fool the kids, the best thing you can do for your skin is to wear sunblock with an SPF of 30, says Cameron Rokhsar, M.D., a dermatologist and laser surgeon. The best block is Anthelios; it's the only sunscreen that contains mexoryl, a powerful drug that protects your skin against UVA rays. But that's just the start.

SOOTHE YOUR EYES
As you age, your cell-renewal process slows: A 20-year-old's outermost layer of skin sheds every 2 weeks. By age 50, that cycle takes twice as long. Your skin also gradually loses collagen, the spongy protein beneath the epidermis. Both factors produce wrinkles and sagging, particularly around your eyes, where the skin is thinnest. "Wrinkles there instantly make you look older," says Dr. Rokhsar. He recommends using Retin-A (tretinoin) or retinol, citing studies showing that it creates new collagen. Try L'Oreal Paris Men's Expert Vita Lift Anti-Wrinkle & Firming Moisturizer.

SCRAPE OFF THE YEARS
Reach for the razor every morning. "The low-grade friction from shaving stimulates collagen production and smoothes the skin," says Kenneth Beer, M.D., a dermatologist in West Palm Beach, Florida. "That's one of the reasons men typically have far fewer wrinkles than women have." So even though a survey of 60 women at Northumbria University found that light stubble was considered sexy, you should limit the Clooney treatment you give her to only a few days a month. (Besides, those same women also said that clean-shaven men looked 5½ years younger than those wearing beards.)

TRIM THE MANE
If you're starting to thin out, befriend a barber. In the early stages of hair loss, you can actually make your hair appear fuller by having it cut short, according to John Allan, the founder of a chain of grooming and lifestyle clubs. Upright and feathered hair tends to look thicker, while longer hair will part and reveal the scalp you're trying to hide. And a less shaggy cut will age well with you, Allan says. "Many men actually have better hairstyles — and look better — in their 40s than they did in their 20s," he says.

WAKE UP YOUTHFUL
Chronic sleep deprivation could quickly add years to your face. Here's why: The extraocular eye muscles are exercised during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and could atrophy when not used, says sleep researcher David Kuhlmann, M.D. This may contribute to the circles beneath your eyes after a poor night's rest. If you can't sleep, then don't go low-carb at dinner. A 2008 Australian study found that men who consumed carbohydrates before bed had significantly longer REM sleep cycles than when they ate a low-carb meal. The carbs help create acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that promotes REM sleep.

Feel Younger
Don't want to lose your marbles later? Lose some calories now. German researchers recently found that eating less can reduce markers of inflammation and insulin resistance, which are suspected risk factors for cognitive decline. Older study participants who cut 30 percent of their daily calories for 3 months were able to improve their memory on a word-recall test. Here are more ways to keep your youthful edge.

ENJOY A HEARTY LAUGH
One of the greatest differences between a child and an adult is that the child has no worries, says sports psychologist Terry Orlick, Ph.D., the author of In Pursuit of Excellence. You can counteract stress — and roll back psychological aging — with laughter. Even the anticipation of a good laugh decreases the stress chemicals cortisol and epinephrine by 39 and 70 percent, respectively, say researchers at Loma Linda University. Laughter is also great for the heart. When participants in a University of Maryland study watched stressful film clips, they experienced vasoconstriction — a narrowing of the blood vessels — while the blood vessels of those watching funny films expanded by 22 percent.

EXPLORE OPPOSITES
Your brainpower naturally starts to slide as you become older. You can help slow that decline by simply deviating from your daily patterns whenever possible — jog backward for a few hundred yards, or brush your teeth with your nondominant hand. This can increase bloodflow in your brain and recharge your neurological connections, according to Daniel Amen, M.D., author of Magnificent Mind at Any Age. Additionally, research by Gary Small, M.D., director of the UCLA Memory and Aging Center, found that "brain training" exercises focusing on memory techniques (for instance, remembering to pick up stamps and eggs by visualizing an egg with a stamp on it) can reset a 45-year-old's cognitive ability score to that of a 30-year-old.

KEEP IT UP. WAY UP...
There's no better way to feel like a 20-year-old than to have sex like one. But plaque buildup affects bloodflow in the small arteries of a man's penis sooner than anywhere else in his body, according to Steven Lamm, M.D., an internist and the author of The Hardness Factor. That's one reason the angle of a man's erection falls to 100 degrees by age 45, down from 130 degrees in his 20s. Dr. Lamm's recommendation for a gravity-defying erection? Edox. Research shows that this supplement's two ingredients, Pycnogenol and the amino acid L-arginine aspartate, increase the production of nitric oxide, a vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased bloodflow and harder, longer-lasting erections.

Stay Young
If you want to see your 85th birthday, limit your alcohol to two drinks a day. This may make you less likely to die of cardiovascular disease, according to Japanese researchers. And make one of those drinks red. A recent review in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that resveratrol, a compound commonly found in red wine, may prevent or delay the onset of chronic disease. As you savor your pinot, swallow these other stay-young secrets.

LOSE THE BELLY, WITH BREAKFAST
Developing a big, round gut as you age will not only make you look bad, but also weigh heavily on your manhood. According to a landmark 2007 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, men with a 5-point increase in body-mass index — about 30 extra pounds — had testosterone levels comparable to men who were a full decade older. Eating the right breakfast — one with lots of protein — will keep your belly at bay, according to multiple studies of the subject. Yet 19 percent of men in their 40s skip this meal altogether. "I've seen guys drop serious weight just by eating protein at breakfast," says Louis Aronne, M.D., the director of the comprehensive weight control program of the West Chester Medical Group, in New York. People on weight-loss diets who break eggs for breakfast, for instance, lose 65 percent more weight than those who down a bagel with the same number of calories, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity.

MAINTAIN YOUR MUSCLES
If you don't use your muscles, you'll lose them. And over time lost muscle is likely to be replaced by fat, according to a Journal of the American College of Nutrition study. That's particularly problematic, because a pound of fat takes up 18 percent more space on your body than a pound of muscle does. So even if you maintain your weight as you age, your waist may still balloon. Spinach can help with muscle maintenance; recent test-tube research from Rutgers University found that a hormone in spinach increases protein synthesis. Spinach is also rich in vitamin K, potassium, and calcium, which can help you ward off osteoporosis.

BUILD A LONGER-LASTING TICKER
If you want to stay young, make your heart stronger. With proper conditioning (high-intensity activities such as cycling and rowing work best) you can increase your heart's stroke volume and your body's oxygen uptake. This allows your heart to pump blood more slowly and efficiently. "The average human life span is about 3 billion heartbeats," says Michael Lauer, M.D., of the National Heart Blood and Lung Institute. "If you can lower your heart rate, you can increase your life expectancy." It's that simple.

Beat the Beauty Blahs

Depending on where you live, winter weather can wreak havoc on your hair and skin. Stay summer-gorgeous all year long with these boosters.

Beat the Beauty Blahs

MAKEUP
Boost your glow factor with a cheek stain, like Sonia Kashuk Super Sheer Liquid Tint in Peony (A, $10, target.com for stores) — but put the color under your foundation, not over it.

To make your darker lipstick colors more luminous, swipe a sheer gloss in a gold shade over them. Try Estée Lauder Limited Edition Opulent Shimmer Gloss in Gold (esteelauder.com).

The eye area is delicate and prone to dryness and windburn. Use a sheer indigo blue or emerald eye shadow to downplay redness, and apply it with a damp brush for a dewy look that will stay put longer.

Smooth on a tinted moisturizer half a shade darker than your skin tone. It will give you a subtle sunkissed look and even out a patchy complexion.

We scoured the globe — see the beauty secrets from the world's most beautiful women.

Camouflage dark circles with a light-diffusing concealer, such as Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Concealer (sephora.com). It provides heavy-duty coverage and also contains light-reflecting particles to brighten the eye area.

SKIN

To slough away the dry skin cells that make your complexion lackluster, exfoliate your face with a gentle scrub, such as Neutrogena Deep Clean Relaxing Nightly Scrub (drugstore.com), twice a week.

Dry skin also makes fine lines more visible, so in the winter try a thicker face lotion with firming benefits, like Soap & Glory Catch a Wrinkle in Time Day Moisturizer, to tighten skin and iron out creases. Or opt for a hydrating facial oil like Josie Maran Argan Oil (josiemarancosmetics.com), to not only nourish but also combat dryness by sealing moisture into the skin.

Add instant radiance by using a body wash with light-diffusing pigments. Olay Body Wash Plus Tone Enriching Ribbons (drugstores), gives your bod a bit of sexy shimmer.

HAIR

Inflate drab winter hair by adding volumizing mousse to your styling routine. Distribute one or two golf-ball-size dollops of mousse, like Rene Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam (beauty.com), through your hair and blow-dry, lifting hair with your fingers and blasting heat at the roots as you go.

To fight dullness, rinse your hair with a cup of apple cider vinegar after shampooing. Then apply a hot-oil treatment such as VO5 and pop on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Your hair will emerge shiny and healthy-looking.

Sexy Holiday Smokey Eyes

121409_evan_rachel_wood_544_02

Tired of wearing the same old black smokey look for every holiday party?

This festive season, try out a bronzey-brown smokey eye that wont overpower your outfit while still being totally smoldering like Evan Rachel Wood’s. “We wanted this look to be classic and metropolitan — something very evening but soft and subtle,” says makeup artist Toby Fleischman who created this look for Evan.

Want to copy Evan’s party perfect eye? Here’s how!:

  1. “I used Boots No 7 Stay Perfect Eye Mousse in Khaki as a base all over Evan’s lids,” Toby says.
  2. “I lined both the top and bottom of her eyes with Mac Eye Pencil in Coffee. Then, I smudged the line into the lashes to diffuse the color a bit,” she says.
  3. “I blended Max Factor Vivid Impact Duo in Irish Coffee into her crease, outer corner and smudged it into the lower lash line too.”
  4. “To keep Evan’s look warm and soft, we didn’t want to go too dark on the lips. Sephora Brilliant Shine Lip Gloss in Bronzed Beauty is one of my absolute favorites because of its sheer color and gorgeous gold flecks. It’s versatile enough to go with red and brown clothes. It doesn’t overpower the rest of the face,” Toby says.

The 7-minute party face

Here’s a confession that should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me: I love a good party. But I’m less enthusiastic about after-work parties for one simple reason: I hate getting ready to go out at the office!

On Saturday nights I like to take my time – soaking in the tub, blow-drying my hair, getting dressed, doing my makeup (can you tell I’m a girly girl?). But there’s something about getting all gussied up at work – is it lugging my beauty supplies with me? The fact that my face is all shiny and my day makeup is as distant a memory as my morning coffee break? Having to spend an extra second in the office bathroom – that usually makes me go out as is. Not exactly a festive look.

Which is why when Toronto makeup artist and founder of Pandora’s Makeup Box cosmetics Susan Kirsch offered to show me some holiday makeup techniques, I jumped at the chance. And issued her a challenge: give me a look I can create in the office bathroom without having to start with a clean, fresh face. Oh, and make it a look I can recreate in less than 10 minutes. Mission impossible, right?

Actually, wrong! Kirsch gave me a fun, sparkly night look and got the time down to seven minutes. Here’s how you can do it too:Face_400

1. Use a soft brush to apply a creamy (good for flakey winter skin) finishing powder (Kirsch used Pandora’s Box Perfect Powder #3) to entire face. Use a not-too-puffy brush for better control (i.e. faster blending). Time: 1 minute.

2. Apply eyelid primer all over the lid to even out leftover eyeshadow and give your fresh shadow something to stick to. Time: 30 seconds.

3. Now for the dramatic, sparkly holiday eye: Kirsch used Champagne, a lightly sparkly beige-gold from my crease to my lashes and shimmery Spun Gold from the crease to the brow. But if you think sparkly eyes are 100% about the sparkle, you should think again. Kirsch recommends sweeping a matte colour (she used Slate Brown) in the crease using a windshield-wiper motion to help give eyes a lift. Be careful not to get too close to the inner corners of your eyes, which can make you look tired. You can use a stiff angled brush to fill in brows with Slate Brown, but you’ll save time if you do it at home in the morning (it won’t fade). Time: 1 minute 30 seconds.

4. Now for liner. Kirsch used a couple of drops of water to mix a matte black shadow into a paste, and then used a thin black liner to apply to the top and bottom lash lines. 1 minute, 30 seconds.
BONUS TIP 1: Give tired, droopy eyes (like mine!) a lift by painting the upper, outer corners of the eye slightly thicker – the height of the outer part of the line should be the same as the widest part of your eye.
BONUS TIP 2: Prevent lower liner from running by lining just above the lower lashline.

5. Mascara: “Grab lashes at the root and slide outwards,” says Kirsch. This leaves a little mascara at the lashline, thickening out your top and bottom liner (making your eyes pop even more!). Time: 1 minute.

6. Cheeks and lips: Use a small brush to sweep a peachy-coloured blush like Pandora’s Classic Pink from the hairline to the front of the cheek. Line lips with nude liner and use a lip brush to fill in with peachy gold lipstick. Top with a coat of peachy-gold gloss (Kirsch used Chic lipstick and Smile gloss). Time: 1 minute 30 seconds.

Total elapsed time: 7 minutes.

Now smile and have fun!

Hot Holiday Lashes!

121409_kardashain_lowndes_wilde_eyelashes_544

Ever wonder why celebs look amazing all the time?

Here’s their secret: fake lashes! Just ask Kim Kardashian, Olivia Wilde and Jessica Lowndes. These three beauties show you how a set of falsies can transform a look from great to glam. “If you’re going out, adding fake lashes is the best thing in the world!” says DuWop cosmetics creator, Christina Bartolucci. “It’s so worth the effort.” For a perfect party look, Christina recommends pairing lashes with a bold, red lip, or, if you’re too shy for red, try a smokey eye with a nude lip.

Check out Christina’s tips and trick for applying your own set of party worthy lashes!

  1. “Trim the very edges off, about 1/8 of inch of the Ardell demi wispies lashes for a more natural look,” Christina says.
  2. “Put a small dot of lash glue on your hand and run the lash strip through it from left to right so just a little glue is on the strip,” she says.
  3. “Place the strip so it goes right past your natural lash line. Tilt the lash up so it just blends in with the natural lash. You might have to hold your eyebrow to steady the eye and make applying easier.”
  4. “Once it gets on you can adjust it. You can pull it left or right but not up and down. Give it a few minutes to dry so eye shadow doesn’t get stuck to the wet glue,” Christina says.
  5. “Use a mascara wand to blend your natural lashes into the fake ones. You want to try to make the lashes stick to the false lashes so they become one. That’s the way you’ll get that totally look,” she says

Get the Look: Natalie Portman

With just two weeks left until Christmas the holiday party circuit is in full swing. And with the packed schedules that lay ahead for all of us in the coming weeks, a flawless makeup look that can take you from office party to New Year’s Eve without a worry is in order. Lucky for us, Natalie Portman was recently sporting a twist on a classic look that fits the bill to perfection—this look is so pretty! Find out how to get her bold pink lips and soft smoky eyes after the jump.

I caught up with Adi Lando, one of Sephora’s Pro Experts, to get the low down on Portman’s look. Using unexpected shades like deep greys and greens to create a sheer smoky eye and a deep pink berry shade instead of classic red will certainly turn heads for all the right reasons. This look is effortless, but still playful and fun—exactly what the holiday season should be all about.

Natalie Portman FACE:

-Start by applying the right moisturizer for your skin type allover the face, and an eye cream to keep you hydrated.

-A liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer will allow you to create a soft and youthful glowing canvas to build upon (Adi likes NARS Sheer Glow foundation).

-Conceal as needed under the eyes and any imperfections (Make Up For Ever Lift Concealer is top notch).

-Apply a lightweight powder to the t-zone to prevent excess shine and set the makeup (try Stila Hydrating Finishing Powder if you are in the market for a new powder).

EYES:

-Always start by priming your eyes, this will keep your shadow in place and allow you to blend flawlessly (Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer is amazing).

-Generously apply dark green eyeliner to the lash line (Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Liner in Covet is a seriously sultry shade).

-Using a smudge brush, start to wiggle the brush up the eyelid, to diffuse the colour (try Sephora Collection Double-ended Every Day Eye Brush). Try to keep most of the colour at the lash line and do not extend past your natural crease.

-Using a soft all over eyeshadow brush softly sweep a grey-green across the lid (Sephora’s Mono Eyeshadow in Python Bag is a deep olive with silver flecks) to soften the liner. Don’t forget to smudge a little bit under the eyes.

-Apply black eyeliner pencil to outer corners of the eyes and smudge with brush (try Sephora Collection Nano Eye Liner No. 01).

-Finish with several coats of a defining mascara to keep the look soft (both Adi and I love Dior Show Iconic).

LIPS:

-Use your fingers to lightly apply a berry coloured stain to the apples of the cheeks. Try Stila Pomegranate Crush for a soft wash of coulour.

-Lightly apply the same stain as a base for your lips to hold the colour and give more depth.

-Frame the lips with a dark berry liner (try Sephora Nano Lip Pleasant Plum No. 9), and feather it with your fingers to prevent harsh lines.

-Finish the look with a creamy raspberry lipstick (Sephora Collection Rouge R10 Mr. Lover is right on the money) and voila! You are now the image of modern elegance.

Natural Tips for Gray Hair, Hair Loss, and Dandruff

By Dr. Maoshing Ni - Posted on Tue, Dec 08, 2009, 3:44 pm PST

It seems that the U.S. Presidency comes with an unpleasant side effect: gray hair. Less than one year into his term, President Obama's hair has turned visibly gray. It happened to his many predecessors, too. Did you know that the condition of your hair actually reveals a lot about the level of stress in your life? Chinese medicine attributes many hair issues to a decline in your vital essence, brought on by stress, overwork, physical and emotional strain, an unhealthy lifestyle, and too much alcohol.

While stress reduction is at the forefront of most of our minds these days, what can you do if your hair woes are already showing up on your head? Read on to find out the best ways to remedy graying hair, hair loss, and dandruff, and learn how to get a shiny, healthy head of hair!

GRAY HAIR
Here are recommendations for graying hair:

  • Eat for hair health. The Chinese have long discovered that black sesame seeds, black beans, and walnuts reverse graying. For healthy and shiny hair, eat foods everyday that are rich in essential fatty acids and omega-rich nutrients: flaxseed oil, sesame oil, olive oil, virgin coconut oil, avocado, beans, nuts and seeds.
  • Chinese herbs for graying hair. "Shou wu" (also called "fo-ti" or polygonum root) is a hair nurture supplement available in Asian herb stores, used to restore hair growth and reverse graying. Rich in vitamin E and the B-complex vitamins, Shou wu has many other health benefits: It supports healthy estrogen profiles in women, stimulates red blood cell production, builds your immune system, maintains healthy cholesterol levels, and improves intestinal regularity.
  • Color your hair naturally. If you want to dye your hair, use the following natural colorants: Henna works well for shades of light brown and red, coffee or black tea may be used by brunettes, and chamomile and lemon juice can color light hair.

HAIR LOSS
Hair growth is affected by the hormonal system, in particular the androgenic hormones, which include testosterone and a derivative of testosterone called DHT. It is normal to lose around 100 hairs each day, which are replaced within days. However, as we age, our hormone levels fluctuate and start to decline. This reduces the stimulus to the hair follicles and results in hair loss. In Chinese medicine, hair loss is thought to be caused by activities that deplete your vital essence: stress, physical and emotional strain, an unhealthy lifestyle, and alcohol--all of which hasten your hormonal decline.

Here are some hair replenishing remedies:

  • Ginger juice helps hair loss. Massage your scalp with fresh ginger juice. Squeeze a 1-inch chunk of ginger root in a garlic press to yield juice. Rub the fresh ginger juice into affected part of scalp. Leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it out--or leave it on overnight to stimulate the hair follicles.
  • Arbovita replenishes hair. Apply the Chinese herb arborvita to stimulate follicles, improve blood flow, and strip away root-clogging oils. I have used this herb for my patients over the last twenty years with very good success. It is found in Hair Tonic, a topical solution. Other Chinese herbs traditionally used for hair loss include eclipta, shou wu, ginger, and sesame. For a natural herbal blend that combines all these herbs to nourish hair follicles and promote healthy hair, try Hair Nurture Formula.
  • Stimulate blood flow. Try this Dao In Massage exercise, which I recommend to all my hair-loss patients. This local stimulation can help invigorate blood circulation. Sit comfortably on a chair. Using the tips of all 10 fingers, gently tap the head all over, stimulating the scalp for about one minute. Begin with light force and gently increase to moderate strength. Then massage the scalp with both hands for 2 minutes, gently at first and then more vigorously taking care not to pull out hair. Straighten the fingers of your right hand, and with the palm side of fingers gently tap all over the scalp 36 times. Repeat with your left hand, another 36 times. To get the best results, do this exercise twice a day.

SCALP PROBLEMS
It's normal to have some degree of dandruff. Your scalp undergoes regular regeneration and dead skin is shed to allow new skin to grow. This flaking can become worse when hormonal imbalances, stress, and improper diet come into play. Dandruff is at its worst during winter and fall, when the air tends to be dry.

Remedies for scalp issues:

  • Apply aloe gel. Squeeze aloe juice directly from the stem of the plant and massage into the scalp once a day, preferably before bedtime, for an entire month. You can get better results by leaving the aloe on overnight and rinsing it out in your morning shower.
  • A baking soda head scrub. In the shower, wet your hands and scrub baking soda vigorously into your scalp. After rinsing it out, massage Tonic Oil- containing the oils of wintergreen, eucalyptus, and menthol-into your scalp. Leave this on for 10 minutes before shampooing.
  • Soak your scalp in green tea. Prepare a mild green tea, and soak your scalp in it for 10 minutes, shampooing out with olive oil, avocado oil, or hypoallergenic shampoo.

For extremely flaky dandruff and dry skin, I often recommend to my patients our Exquisite Skin Chinese herbal formula.

TIPS FOR SHINY, HEALTHY HAIR
Whatever your hair issues, these will boost your overall hair and head health:

  • Nourish your hair. For shiny hair, mash a ripe avocado, massage it into your hair and scalp, and leave it on for 1 to 2 hours once a week.
  • Brush bad hair days away. Be like a renowned Chinese empress who had a full head of beautiful hair at the end of her long life, the result of a daily 500-stroke hair brushing. Using a natural-bristle brush, spread your hair's natural oils with full strokes from the scalp down the to tips, 100 strokes every evening. Studies show steady massage and brushing over time stems hair loss, promotes hair growth, and generally improves hair quality.
  • Less stress. For all hair and scalp problems, a daily program of stress reduction exercises and meditation can help regulate your energy and strengthen your essence.
  • Go natural. Eliminate hair care products that contain harsh chemicals, which can damage hair roots and strip vital nutrients from the follicles. Use only products with natural ingredients.
I hope this article finds you with a full head of healthy hair! I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

Get a Natural Glow Like Ali Larter

For a look that's flattering, warm, and a bit on the softer side, a cheek tint is always a great option. Cheek tints have enough punch to be noticeable but are light enough so you don't feel as if you've overdone it. Take Ali Larter, for instance, who looks as though she's blushing naturally. For that glowing-from-within effect, a sheer cheek tint is the way to go. Makeup artist Mai Quynh used Mark's Just Pinched Instant Blush Tint in Nude ($7) on the apples of Ali's cheeks, sweeping a mattifying powder over the blush to set. Generally speaking, tints that come in push-up sticks are easy to apply — you just swivel the product up, blend it into skin, and go — but brush-on liquid versions such as Benefit's PosieTint can come in handy, too. (Here's a tip if you go for that version: apply the liquid tint with a cosmetic sponge for lighter coverage.) Need ideas for getting cheeky? Check out some options in the widget below.

Fifties glamour returns as Scarlett Johansson smoulders in new ad campaign

How much do we love the new Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign featuring Scarlett Johansson?

She smoulders in front of the camera, all bust and hips and pale flesh, looking unapologetically curvy - and boy, does she look sexy.

This return to form marks the start of a backlash against the waif-like models who are used in most fashion campaigns and harks back to an era when women looked glamorous when they went to the shops.

Curvy: Scarlett Johansson looks classic but modern in the advert for Dolce & Gabbana's One fragrance

The style is nostalgic, but Johansson makes it look modern. We've become so used to androgynous looking bodies that her curves - and that waist - look truly striking and womanly.

It's not just her natural, healthy figure that's so refreshing; we're swooning over the loose, side-swept blonde bun, grey eyes and nude, pouting lips.

Recreate the understated sexy look in a slip from M&S, Wolford or Spanx.

On the eyes, opt for a dove grey eye shadow with charcoal colour along the eye-line and lashings of black mascara, keep your skin porcelain and add a pale shade on your lips.

Ingredients: Kola Nut

When it comes to colas, I'm a Coke kind of gal. What about you? Kola nuts, which are seeds that come from a tropical African tree, are often chewed for their hunger-quelling properties. High in caffeine, kola nuts were, and often still are, used in making soft drinks — hence the name cola.

As far as their uses in beauty, you'll often find kola nut in products for firming, boosting, energizing, and stimulating the skin, like: Prescriptives Comfort Cream Soothing Relief For Sensitive Skin ($39.50), Clinique Deep Cleansing Emergency Mask ($19.50), and Elemental Herbology SOS Circulation Serum.
