Sarah Palin's makeup artist is McCain campaign's highest paid staffer

The traveling makeup artist was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission.  While her Hair Stylist was paid $10,000.

The figure means that the make-up artist was "the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain's presidential campaign," according to the New York Times.

Amy Strozzi, nominated for an Emmy award makeup work on the show "So You Think You Can Dance?", was paid more than John McCain's foreign policy adviser and his senior communications staffer.

McCain's foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, was paid $12,500 for same period according to the finance reports.

The campaign categorized Strozzi's payment as "Personnel Svc/Equipment."

The Republican National Committee received strong criticism this week after a report showed that around $150,000 was spent on clothing, makeup and hair for Palin and her family in September.

"Those clothes are not my property. We had three days of using clothes that the RNC purchased," Palin told Fox News.

A Real Deal

All this talk of financial meltdowns and 401K losses is enough to make any one of us start finally listening to that frugal voice inside our heads. Fret not, chicsters. Beauty Junkie will be bringing you many a quality bargain over the coming months. We’re all in this together, non? One of our favorite finds is the Enliven Cooling Eye Gel from Bioré. It’s packed with green coconut water and Indian ginseng–both super rejuvenators. And the way high-tech clathrate moisture matrix helps the thin skin around your eyes absorb more water. End result–everybody looks better and your skin is happy. Even better? It’s only $9.99 so your new budget is still intact.

Perfect that Pout

Not all of us can boast of a sensuous pout like Angelina Jolie’s….Grieve Not! Ace Make Up artist Cory Walia suggests some simple tricks to enhance the beauty of your lips…

LIPS LURE
Luscious Lips:
Should not be overly, shiny, shimmery or glossy. Darker colours and matte textures look better on thick full lips. Avoid a dark outline and pale lipstick.

Thin Lips:
The lips should be lined with a pencil in the same shade as the lipstick by drawing on the outer edge of the lips. Use light colours, shiny, metallic and glossy textures to make the lips look large.

TIPS

  • Daub highlighters on the curve of the top of your lips.
  • To get a perfect pout, if your lips are thin, smear a lighter shade in the center. Choose shimmery shades to glam up.
  • To ensure that the lipsticks does not get eaten up soon, apply a tiny amount of foundation on your lips.

Couture 2008 Make-up Trends: Pallavi Jaikishan

No shrinking violets here! For Pallavi Jaikishan's showing, Mehra Kolah puts the spotlight on scarlet lips and nails that did justice to the models' porcelain skin.

Mehra fuses elements from two bygone eras to create the look: strong eyebrows circa the eighties and scarlet lips circa the thirties. In order to maintain that focus, she keeps the skin fresh, glowing and transparent, and the lids and cheeks pale.

"I've used Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Pink on the apples of the cheek to make them look healthy," revealed Kolah. "For lips, get a deep color, outline the lips with a lip pencil so it doesn't bleed, and fill it in with color. If you are careful with your lipstick and don't smudge it, you can add a hint of gloss... otherwise red on its own is brilliant."

"Define the contour of your eye in shades of brown, depending on your skin tone. Add a hint of bronze and gold shimmer for a glamorous look. Don't use an eye liner. Instead, up the amp with coats of mascara," advises Mehra.

Kneen Republic

If we’re in the middle of a recession, one couldn’t tell after witnessing Banana Republic’s new creative director Simon Kneen’s Spring 2009 show at the Cedar Lake yesterday. The primary themes for the collection included “sense of ease” and “buoyant Californian colors.” And Kneen delivered just that with an array of pastels, sockless looks for men, crisp Oxford shirts, silk evening gowns, and monochromatic separates. Top models like Lindsay Ellingson, Garrett Neff, and Olga Sherer graced the runway while Robbie Myers, Glenda Bailey, Joe Zee, Cindi Leive, Xanthipi Joannides, and Tom Florio were just few of the front row guests.

Couture 2008 Make-up Trends: Manish Malhotra

Make-up artist Mehra Kolah powders the models' skin to a matte finish, with little or no sheen. Taking her cue from the sinuous lines of the collection, she paints on vines of liquid liner around the eyes. "The eyes are the story. They lend women strength," she explains. "When you do smoky eyes, put a powder guard under your eye so that if there is any black powder that drops from the brush while trying to achieve the look, it will be in control."

The cheeks are a play of colors of the skin – tone-on-tone – with a hint of shimmering pink on the apple of the cheek for a natural glow. "The idea is to work according to the shape of your face. Analyze the parts you want to downplay. Add shine to enhance the parts you want to focus on and add depth with a darker color to recede the part you want to downplay," instructs Mehra.

With innocence and youthful naiveté in mind, the hair is a loose play of texture... like curls that have opened out. "Keep the crown area neatly but loosely pinned and let the remaining hair fall loosely. I wanted the girls to appear as though they had fallen peacefully asleep, so we added a bit of disarray to one side." To get this soft-focus style, she teases the tiny hairs along the scalp line.

McCain's American Idol Make-Up Artist Makes Big Bucks

American Idol make-up artist Tifanie White has found some high profile work while the show is on break. (Altaffer/AP)

Remember last month when Republican presidential nominee John McCain got made up by the American Idol make-up artist?

Well, it wasn't a one-shot deal. The make-up artist to the wannabe-stars is getting paid beaucoup bucks to make McCain, 72, more telegenic.

Tifanie White, who reportedly has done makeup for the shows "So You Think You Can Dance" and "American Idol," was paid a total of $8,672.55 in September by the McCain-Palin campaign, according to the campaign's latest monthly financial report filed this week with the Federal Election Commission. She was paid $5,583.43 the previous month, records show.

We asked McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers whether McCain was happy with the American Idol make-up artist's work, and whether Ms. White also does makeup for McCain's naturally telegenic vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. Rogers replied via email, "No comment."

We refrained from asking whether McCain might have a future on "American Idol" if things don't break his way two weeks from today on Election Day. But at least he has an in if he so chooses.

Will Palin's Make-up Artist Add to Extreme Makeover Woes?

The focus on Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has shifted from her policy positions to her makeup and clothing purchases. (AP Photo/Sara D. Davis)

John McCain's makeup is right out of "American Idol." Running mate Sarah Palin's is so "So You Think You Can Dance" -- and so much more expensive.

McCain's September payments of $8,672.55 to "American Idol" make-up artist Tifanie White, who has also worked on the reality dance show "So You Think You Can Dance," are a drop in the bucket on the campaign's beautification front compared to the GOP vice presidential nominee.

The Sleuth has learned that Palin's high-paid traveling make-up artist is Amy Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work as head of makeup on "So You Think You Can Dance." Strozzi was paid $13,200 by the McCain-Palin campaign last month alone, according to the campaign's latest financial disclosure report filed this week.

That's $4,527.45 more than McCain's make-up artist made last month. And as we mentioned yesterday in our exclusive on McCain's make-up artist, the 72-year-old Arizona senator, who has prominent scars from battling cancer, requires more work than does the more naturally telegenic 44-year-old Palin.

Strozzi, whose first name is misspelled as "Ami" in the campaign's financial report, is listed as doing "communications consulting" work. But two sources close to the campaign tell the Sleuth Strozzi is Palin's make-up artist.

They also describe Strozzi, whose resume you can view here, as "Goth" and "punk." She certainly has that flare, as you can see in this Fox News video posted on YouTube of Strozzi and another colleague working backstage on the reality dance show.

Our report on Palin's make-up artist comes after the embarrassing story in Politico that the Republican Party shelled out $150,000 at luxury stores like Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue -- real regular everyday Joe Sixpack, Joe the Plumber kinda stores, huh? -- to clothe and accessorize the vice presidential nominee.

It's probably a safe bet that Palin's makeup and makeover spending sprees won't help matters in the court of public opinion.

For the first time since Palin joined the GOP ticket, more voters have a negative opinion of her than a positive one, 47 to 38 percent, according to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.

The Politico report on Palin's $150,000 fashion makeover could raise more serious ethical and legal questions. The Federal Election Campaign Act prohibits the conversion of campaign funds to personal use. Specifically: "a contribution or donation shall be considered to be converted to personal use if the contribution or amount is used to fulfill any commitment, obligation, or expense of a person that would exist irrespective of the campaign's election campaign or individual's duties as a holder of Federal office, including . . . a clothing purchase."

Which may explain why campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said in her statement released last night that it "was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

Read Up! The Scoop on Bobbi Brown’s Latest Tome

p1010945-copy.jpg

As far as beauty moguls go, Bobbi Brown is one of our favorites. As one of the most straight-talking artists in the biz, she’s preparing for the launch of her supremely useful new book, Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual. “It’s really a textbook,” Brown told Chic Report at this morning’s breakfast at Bond 33 Gallery. “We’re opening up an academy next year, and our courses are already being taught at Montclair State, where I live, and Emerson College in Boston.” (That’s Brown’s alma mater; she also serves on the Board of Trustees.) Editors munched on mini muffins and fruit skewers while admiring blow-ups of Brown’s beautifully designed pages, hung gallery-like on the walls. And naturally, there was new product to discuss. The collector’s edition Bobbi Brights palette (seen above) is inspired by the “fun kit” Brown uses during Fashion Week. It features 35 soft matte shades like shamrock, wisteria, blue irisand gum drop. But the real chatter centered on the new Skin Foundation SPF 15, a long-lasting hydrating foundation that could charm even those adverse to the stuff. Sorry, chicsters, you must wait ’til January–but the book is available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

Up Close and Personal with Mickey Contractor

Mickey Contractor. He’s the man whose magical make-up wand touches Bollywood’s most famous faces. He is the one who sets India’s strongest beauty trends on the catwalk and off it. Having been around for around three decades, he knows the pulse of a pigment like no one else. During a Vogue India cover shoot, Kareena didn’t give a single angle without him. During her wedding, Aishwarya didn’t budge an inch without him. He is, in short, make-up’s most influential man in the country. Mickey, director of make-up artistry, M.A.C India, the best thing that's happen to Bollywood's make-up vans.

Do you remember the first time with Bollywood make-up?
I started in the late 1970s as an assistant to Pandhari Juker. My first time on the sets was at Manoj Kumar’s Kranti. I was allowed to hold mirrors for character actors! My first independent film was Saath Saath in 1982. It starred Deepti Naval and Farooq Shaikh. I did the make-up for Farooq and some character actors.

Three decades! Things must be so different now…
Oh yes! Frankly, I feel we are in a different era altogether. Those were the days when you couldn’t find a single decent lipstick! In fact, it’s uncanny how M.A.C has played a role in shaping my career. When I was doing Kajol’s first film, Bekhudi, I remember buying my first few M.A.C lipsticks in Canada. I still remember that I bought Taupe, Twig and Diva.

From Kajol’s first film to her milestone smoky look in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham to now…. How has the make-up changed?
Lots! I did Bekhudi and now in December, I will do My Name Is Khan, Karan Johar’s latest film with Shah Rukh Khan. When I look back I can say that I wouldn’t do her make-up now like I did in those days. But that was the trend in those years. Today, it would be completely different. After M.A.C, my techniques have changed dramatically. Also, my perception of her face has changed. She has changed from a teenager to a mother. I have changed from a bachelor to a father of two!

Priyanka Chopra in Dostana

Which are your new films?
There’s Drona that is out on October 2 with Priyanka Chopra. I have done bits and pieces for her in Fashion and there’s Priyanka again in Dostana where she’s got a tawny look, typically Miami.

Do you have a special chemistry with Priyanka Chopra?
(Laughs) She tells me that when she was a model I did a really bad campaign for her and made her look like shit but I don’t remember anything about it! It’s the first time that I have done six films in a row with someone and I don’t think it will happen again. There’s a great comfort factor.

Coming to M.A.C, how did the Indian skin-specific foundations come about?
When I joined MAC, the only product that I didn’t use much was their foundation. I wasn’t happy with their colors and we had to mix quite a few shades to get the color. This was time consuming and also a problem for continuity. So my colleague Vimi Joshi and I started mixing and came up with new shades for the Indian skin tone. Very soon, we will launch compatible concealers.

What exactly is your role in M.A.C?
Well, I endorse the brand, somewhat like the face of M.A.C in India. I take all the trends and customize them and make them consumer-friendly. I take international trends and make them suitable to the vision of Indian designers. I also hold master classes and educate the masses on techniques.

M.A.C for Manish Arora

Designer Manish Arora has mentioned he is collaborating with MAC…
M.A.C has worked with Manish on many of his shows. We have been constantly backing him and providing him with proper infrastructure. When M.A.C came to India they wanted to do a designer collaboration. But it made sense to go with someone to whom make-up matters. And for Manish, make-up is a very vital part of his package. We have been working on his line for two years because testing takes a really long time. Then we also need to check for scientific reactions like oxidation, etc. Manish Arora's collection is now available.

Where does M.A.C and make-up fit in the current Fashion Week scenario?
It goes hand in hand. Fashion without make-up is like a sari without a petticoat! During Fashion Week every designer wants to outdo one another and most of the time the pressure falls on the make-up artist. We realize that dramatic make-up can take away from the clothes and the idea of Fashion Week is to showcase the designer’s clothes. Hair and make-up are just used to pad things up. Many designers are now understanding the equation. I hope some day roles are reversed and we show our trends while the designers are willing to take a backseat just like we do now!

Mickey picks his Top 10 M.A.C products
Which celeb face made your hands tremble?
Hema Malini. She is the ultimate dream girl in Hindi cinema

Kareena or Aishwarya?
Aishwarya

Who has a perfect face?
Aishwarya

Men and make-up…
Horrible

Celeb or commoner — who’s face excites you more?
A great face excites me most.

Bridal make-up…
Is very emotional.

Ash’s bridal make-up…
Was very emotional. It was for a friend.

Benefit erase paste concealer

Benefit erase paste concealer

benefit erase paste
I finally got my cute little box in the mail and was really looking forward to benefit's new concealer. Then I read the very handy little lesson leaflet in the box and see they refer to using the included applicator spatula. I should have known better from those trendy folks at benefit to throw in another goody. Like most of benefit's great line, erase paste instantly evens, brightens and erases blotches and redness with a few easy steps. Now admittedly there are some benefit products I've tried and since left to dry up in the drawer but I can see erase paste coming in handy when needed.

According to benefit ( and their crack Marketing team) Signs of stress & fatigue are a thing of the past with this innovative formula. This concentrated, creamy, blendable concealer instantly brightens & camouflages all-in-one. Well it did brighten me up a bit under my eyes and it did blend in well. I can't say I'm in love the freebie flexi-plastic spatula but then again I can't recommend sticking your fingers, no matter how clean, into the jar. A tube or even a small pump is preferable since anything you can stick back into an open jar or bottle can add to contamination. That fact aside this paste should really be called a cream - not too greasy and not too dry. Here's the quick application advice from benefit - poof! your perfect instructions:
The tiny, too cool retro 0.15 oz tub come in three shades (1 fair, 2 medium and 3 deep) to match your particular skin tone. I received the medium and it's a pretty good match for my winter skin. Again the long term likability remains to be seen but out of the box, it's now on my daily (when necessary) routine.

24k sexy gold lip gloss by Benefit Cosmetics

Benefits 24k sexy gold lip gloss is my new favorite. Every application glides on a warm sensual glow, very feminine and sexy! This gloss adds tiny flex of gold to natural lips or can be layered over lipsticks and liners. The packaging is beautiful and the applicator is very soft making the sheer gold glistening gloss apply perfectly. This Benefit 24k sexy gold lip gloss brings the expression "All that glitters is gold" to life.

Emanuel Ungaro Joins MAC

Un Pallette d’Ungaro

ungaropowdercompact-009.jpg

Paris design house Emanuel Ungaro is teaming with MAC cosmetics. The collaboration debuts this season with romantic flair combined with Ungaro's modern style.

Esteban Cortazar for Emanuel Ungaro has the colors for lips, eyes, and cheeks which were inspired by the Ungaro A/W ‘08 show in Paris but key makeup artist Sharon Dowsett had Monet’s “Water Lilies” in mind while creating the looks using soft browns, corals, and pinks. “She’s feminine but not girly, stylish but not concerned, warm but not bronzed,” says Dowsett. And what does young Cortazar think of his latest project avec M.A.C: “I’m so excited. They believed in me from my first show since I was friends with all the girls from the Miami store. I really feel part of the M.A.C family.”

The exclusive MAC collection includes pastel pink colours for the lips, hot pink blushes and violet shades for the eyes.

The limited edition collection is available at MAC counters.
