Beauty Tips for this Spring

makeup for spring (Rogers Digital Media 2010, All Rights Reserved.)

After a long, pale-skinned winter, I look forward to a healthy glow. Whether it's from a self-tanner (my new fave is Chanel Précision Soleil Identité Face Self-Tanner, 50 mL/$41, which acts like a moisturizer, but within two to three hours gives your skin the most natural bronze) or from spending time outdoors, it's time to let your natural glow shine through and pare down your makeup palette. One misconception is that tanned skin needs more colour, but softer shadessuch as tawny beige, caramel, pink or brown actually look best. These tones put the emphasis on your newly tanned skin, not your individual features.

"My favourite look for spring and summer is a neutral eye with a hint of gloss on top, finished with a coat of brown mascara," says Toronto-based makeup artist Lisa Aharon. "It's simple and uncomplicated - perfect for the warmer weather." Here are the five items every woman should have in her makeup bag this season.

Pink or neutral sheer lip gloss
A bright pout on sun-kissed skin can verge on looking trashy (remember Tammy Faye Bakker?). However, choosing a shade that's too pale may leave your lips looking chalky and washed out (sorry, Pamela Anderson). Aharon recommends sticking to neutral and pink sheer glosses to complement - not overwhelm - your new glow.

Our picks:
Softlips gloss in Sheer Bliss, 7 g/$5, and Chanel Cristalle Gloss in Vanilla Dream, 5 mL/$26.

Similar to your lips, you don't want your eyeshadow to take over (um, do we have to bring up Tammy Faye again?). The trick is to go only one or two shades darker than the beige/sand/caramel/brown you would normally wear. Follow with a clear gloss overtop to create dimension.

Tip:
If your skin tends to be oily, skip the eye gloss and carry blotting papers instead for quick touch-ups.

Our picks:
Lise Watier Effet Lumiére Cream-to-powder Eyeshadow in Soleil, 7 mL/$17, Alison Raffaele Soft Shadow in Bronzeshine, 3 g/$26, Maybelline Dream Mousse Shadow in Ivory Illusion, 4 g/$9, and Cargo eyeshadow in St. Tropez, 4 g/$19.

This is the perfect choice to sidle up next to your new neutral eyeshadow - even though they're in the same colour family, this monochromatic look will work. By sticking to an understated makeup palette, your tanned look stays warm and natural, emphasizing the new glow of your skin. Plus, brown mascara is extremely flattering on all skin tones - and it's nice to take a break from basic black.

Our picks:
Cover Girl LashExact in Black Brown, 4 mL/$9, and Lancaster Infinite Glamour Mascara in Brown, 6 mL/$26.

makeup for spring (Rogers Digital Media 2010, All Rights Reserved.)

This item should be in your makeup bag all year-round. Usually you'd sweep pink blush over the apples of your cheeks to reproduce a natural flush. But with your new-found glow, rub it onto the high points of the cheekbones and on the bridge of your nose to "imitate a bit of - dare I say it - burn," says Aharon.

Our picks:
Revlon Cream Blush in Just Peachy, 3 g/$12, and Supply Two Cheek Kiss in First, 2 g/$20.

Gold-flecked bronzer (Rogers Digital Media 2010, All Rights Reserved.)

Larger image

You've already got a touch of colour, but pumping it up by adding a gold-flecked bronzing powder not only complements your summer skin, but can also take your day look into the evening. Here's another trick: "I like to use a brown eye pencil to dot fake freckles on the cheeks and nose bridge, then soften them with a dusting of powder bronzer overtop," says Aharon. The end result is beach-babe flirtatious.

Tip: If you feel you need more coverage, skip the foundation. "Just use concealer under the eyes (adjust the shade to your new skin tone) or try a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer. These will look more natural on your tan than regular foundation," says Aharon. Try DuWop Revolution Face Tinted Moisturizer in Conchita, 50 mL/$33, or Revlon ColorStay Active Light Makeup, 30 mL/$19.

Our picks:
Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Bronzer in Vegas Strip, 9 g/$20, and Shiseido The Makeup Multi-Shade Enhancer in Terra-Cotta Glow, 10 g/$38.

Concealer Spring Notes

"It's time to toss the liquid concealer if it begins to separate. One side will look like water and the other side will be thick and dry. This means it's really too old to use anymore!" says New York makeup artist Nicole Bryl.

"Also, if your stick concealer is so dry that it breaks apart when you try to use it, or its cracked when you take the lid off, I would suggest tossing as soon as possible. It's a sign that bacteria is forming on it, and you would never want that close to your sensitive eyes," adds Bryl.

Milani's HD Concealer brings the reflective, soft focus pigments once only available in high end lines to the mass price point with an easy-to-blend click-through brush built right into the product.

Blush Spring Notes

More than any other product, women are often guilty of trying to eek out more uses out of blush long after it has hardened and the color changed.

"Toss your blush if there is a huge hole in the center of it and it has been sitting around in your makeup case for over a year untouched. Yuck!" says Bryl.

Using too-old blush can actually make your complexion look stale, as micronized reflective particles dull as bacteria grows and changes the texture. The result? The shade no longer glows and reflect light on your cheekbones, and instead just looks hollow. To prevent bacteria build-up, tissue the top layer of your blush off every once in awhile to keep color fresh.

Cargo's bouquet of spring blush lovelies all pack a color pop that is best blended onto the apples of the cheeks and along the mid to upper ridge of the cheekbone for a lifting effect.

Lipstick & Lipgloss Spring Notes

With the constant swiveling up and down and swishing in and out of lipstick and lipgloss, these two makeup musts often end up the gunkiest offenders in cosmetic cases.

Lipstick can freshly last for up to 14 months, especially if you wipe off the bullet with a tissue and alcohol every so often to sanitize, says Elizabeth Gerbino, a freelance makeup artist with Julie Hewett Los Angeles. Lipstick begins to turn if you see beads of formula separation forming on the bullet, or if the surface becomes hard and drier.

Lipgloss is better judged by its smell and taste; if either get strong and crayon-like, the gloss has turned. And if the gloss has a doe-foot applicator, it's more prone to collecting bacteria, and should be thrown out sooner, around the 6 month mark, says Hodzic.

Julie Hewett's dramatic Femme Noir red lipcolor celebrates the season's matte look in a fierce way, while Tarte's Natural Lip Stain combines the flush of a lipstick with the naturally healthy and shiny finish of a gloss.

Mascara Spring Notes

There's an ugly reason for the pretty well-known three-month rule for tossing mascara.

"Everyone has little microbial eyelash mites -- called Dermodex -- that are generally harmless. But if you use the same mascara for an extended period of time, they can build up and cause an infection," says Gerbino.

The constant in-and-out swishing motion of the tube exposes more of the contents to air, which can further multiply bacteria. So the experts we asked all agreed; heed the three month time frame on mascara, because infections and styes in your eyes are just not worth any amount of risk.

Rimmel's Max Volume Flash Mascara features volume-plumping collagen and keratin, and maximizes lashes with a super-sized brush designed to hit as many lashes as possible.

Gel Eyline Notes

Just about every beauty brand has their own version of a gel eyeliner out now, and most women either own or have tried one. Gel eyeliners have a tendency to dry out before they turn bad, and you should toss at this point or else risk tiny flakes of liner malting from your lashline to the darker undereye pad underneath.

But if your gel eyeliner stays moist, it still has a time limit.

"Any liquid or wet product that is used around eyes can easily harbor bacteria, so you should be diligent about tossing if you wet your brush to apply the gel eyeliner. if you use a dry brush, toss after a year," advises Carmindy, makeup artist on Bravo's What Not To Wear.

Smashbox's Jet Set Teal Waterproof Eye Liner is the flirtatiously hot shade for spring; we love the look of lining both top and bottom lashlines with a thin stroke of the bright turquoise beauty. In the mass market, Maybelline's Eye Studio Gel Eye Liner is the latest entry, with an oil-free formula that is smudge and water-proof.

SPF Makeup - Notes

While it's recommended you always apply a skincare SPF of 30 or higher for daily protection, many women further shield themselves with makeup items that contain sunscreen. "As a general rule, chemical sunscreen products have expiration dates listed on the bottle, after which you should toss because the protection will degrade. Physical blocks like titanium dioxide don't usually have expiration dates, and are good for about three years. But that's not to say the makeup won't turn before then," says Dr. Josh Zeichner, spokesperson for The Skin Cancer Foundation.

If you can't remember how long you've had a particular product, take a whiff and look at the texture. If the product is clumping up, turning runny or smells funny, it's time to throw it out.

Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag: When to Throw Out Your Cosmetics and What to Replace Them With

If unidentified foreign objects have been swimming around in your makeup bag all winter long, now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves for a deep spring cleaning that will leave your case -- and face -- looking refreshed and rejuvenated for the sunny season ahead.

Grungy makeup bags aren't just icky; they can harbor germs and bacteria that can actually make you sick or cause an eye infection. Too-old makeup can also lose pigment and texture, making shades turn muddy on complexions and crease, and possibly even aging your look beyond your years.

We've asked the experts for realistic advice on when you really need to chuck certain cosmetics, as we would hate to throw away perfectly good makeup for no reason -- but sometimes it's far past time to say goodbye.

Top 10 Mascara Trends for Spring 2010

Spring is all about long, thick, sexy lashes. Here, expert tips on how to get them.

1. Two For One: "Lashes can be thought of like hair: you're always going to want them longer and thicker," says makeup artist Maggie Kerr. "What I've noticed with cosmetics companies is that instead of having one mascara for lengthening and a separate one for thickening, new formulations are combining the two." Laura Mercier's Thickening & Building Mascara ($20), YSL Mascara Singulier ($30), and Estee Lauder's Projectionist Mascara ($19.50) are great combination formulas.

2. Magic Wands: Many different wands have come out on the market recently, Kerr says. Some are shaped in a ball to get at the little hairs in the inner corners of the eyes (Givenchy Phenomen'eyes $28), some vibrate to also achieve the same effect of getting at the finer hairs and distributing the formula evenly (Estee Lauder Turbo Lash, $32), some have fat wands to create volume (Christian Dior Dior Show $24), Benefit BADgal, $19.00), some have mini wands to maximize short eyelashes (Maybelline Lash Discovery, $7.99), while others have entirely synthetic bristles (YSL Everlong, $28.50).

3. Find Your Formula: "I fully believe that you can get the same effect of lengthening and thickening with any wand, it's really the formula that counts," says Kerr. If the formula is too thick to try and create volume, no brush will be able to separate the lashes completely and still add heft; the lashes will end up clumping together a la Tammy Faye. Kerr says a better way to apply any mascara is to wiggle the wand horizontally from inside working out over your lashes. Brush it out with a clean mascara wand, which can be purchased in packs at a beauty retailer such as Sally's, then apply again. Keep repeating until you've acheived the desired thickness and length. "Sometimes I will spend 10 minutes on my lashes if I want them extremely dramatic," says Kerr.

4. Ebony Is The New Black: When it comes to pigment this season, the blacker the better. Thick and dark is the look you're going for. "L'Oreal's Carbon Black series ($7.25) has a great pigment, as does bareMinerals' Flawless Definition Mascara ($18)," Kerr says.

BareMinerals Flawless Definition Mascara, YSL Everlong Mascara, Make Up For Ever Lash Fibers, L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black. Photo: Bloomingdales.com | YSL.com | Sephora.com | Drugstore.com

5. Go Organic: For those who prefer "green" products, there are some great organic lines on the market and that includes mascaras. "I really like Jane Iredale's Longest Lash Thickening & Lengthening Mascara in Black Ice ($32)," Kerr says. "It doesn't irritate the eyes, is mineral based and all natural, and actually delivers what it promises - long, thick lashes." Kerr uses the product on herself and on clients who are more sensitive to eye makeup formulations. "The formula doesn't harden the lashes to mini spikes when it dries, and it comes in a squeezable tube to get every last drop out – added bonus."

6. Long and Strong: "Lash Extensions can help a girl roll out of bed looking instantly fabulous," Kerr says. "A couple of my makeup artist colleagues have full doe-eyed sets that make me envious each time I see them!" Kerr warns that the process can be costly initially ($200-$400), but maintenance is every 3 months and refills are cheaper (around $65 to touch up). In response to the demand, lash salons are popping up all over the country. Think of lash extensions like nail extensions. Each individual lash is glued onto the natural lash. When the natural lash grows out, the artificial one has to be reshaped and filled in at the root. "Because the artificial lash is permanent, this look is popular if you'll be spending a lot of time at the beach and don't want to have to deal with makeup," Kerr says. Check out Extreme Lashes or Lavish Lashes to find a salon near you.

7. Lash Love: If eye lash extensions are not for you, give your lashes a little extra love with Latisse, an eyelash growth serum based on a glaucoma treatment formula. Regular use of the product means longer, fuller lashes all around. But you'll have to convince your doctor that it's absolutely essential that you have the sexiest lashes in town: It's only available on prescription. For a non-prescription growth formula, try Tarte MultiplEYE ($22) which increases the appearance of lash length with regular use.

Pucker Up to Spring's Hottest Lip Shades

Spring 2010 runway lip color prada tuleh and donna karan

Spring clothing trends flourished during fashion week, but what we really couldn't take our eyes off were the lips -- from soft and barely there to blazing, patent leather red -- kissing the runways.

To get to the bottom of what we should be painting on our pouts for Spring and Summer 2010, we sought advice from The Daily 10's makeup department head Lisa Zimmitti (who is behind Catt Sadler's fabulously-done makeup), makeup artist and photo shoot maven Emily Kate Warren, and makeup artist Richard Class.

"The major trends are flesh tone lips, hints of pink and we are also seeing that the reds are staying around," says Zimmitti, who looked to fashion shows like Proenza Schouler, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Tuleh, Versace and Donna Karan for major direction.

From flesh tones and to soft berries to siren reds, read on for the shades on everyone's lips.

Lancome Lucent Nude lip gloss

Flesh tone lips: Less is more when it comes to lips this season. But application is key. "A great tip for nude lips is to buff dead skin off using a dry tissue to rub vigorously over pre-lip balmed lips," says Warren. "Then, swipe on a fresh coat of balm, and touch the lipstick directly to your lips, and press your lips together to roll the color out toward the edges, this way they aren't perfectly lined." Try: M.A.C. Liberty of London Lip Glass in Frankly Fresh, $14.

Soft washes of color: A barely there blush -- on the lips -- is a fresh and current look for spring. Zimmitti suggests approaching the look simply by just blending your lip liner out into the center of your lips, making sure the color is soft and even. To score the look with lipstick, she recommends using a lip primer so the lipstick stays on and looks smooth. And for the rest of the face, make sure you don't overdo it just because lips are soft. "It's not time for tan skin, so keep your makeup fresh with light coverage foundation and a pop of pink blush," she says. "Also, go for lots of mascara; you can never skimp on full lashes!" Try: Lancome La Laque Fever LipShine in Lucent Nude, $26.50.

Purposeful nude colors: "I saw lots of 'purposeful' nude colors on the runways for Spring," says Warren. "It doesn't just look like you're not wearing lipstick, it looks like you are wearing a tone lighter than your lips and/or neutral shades on lips." Warren said this look pairs perfectly with a heavy eye (like big lashes, strong colors or intense liner) or just to complete an overall "natural" look.

MAC Russian Red Lipstick Nars Lip Stain Gloss in Sayonara

Sheens Over Shimmers: Gloss is still in, but it's not the sparkly kind we've been accustomed to for the past few seasons. "You're going to do matte or gloss lipstick, we're not seeing a whole lot of shimmer, but more of a sheen this spring," Zimmitti says. Try: Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Pixel, $18

Berry Tones: If nude is not in your repertoire of trends you plan to try, no worries. Cranberry and Raspberry tones are just as hot, but instead of going bright look for more subdued tones. "It will be a very soft and light berry color, almost like you have been drinking wine," says Class. "Just a gorgeous wash of slight color, nothing heavy." Try: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, $24

Ruby Reds: Last but not least, if you're going to go for red, go all out. Zimmitti said red also had some face time on the runways, at trend setting shows like Prada. Try: M.A.C. Matte Lipstick in Russian Red, $14

Kardashian Sisters to Serve as PerfectSkin Spokeswomen

Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian. Photo: Campos/X17online.com

Ever wonder how celebs who have to wear buckets of makeup for on-air time or personal appearances keep either breakouts or serious dryness at bay? They usually have a routine that they stick to and likely a coterie of estheticians and dermatologists who tend to them as well. In the case of the Kardashian gals -- Kim, Khloe and Kourtney -- the PerfectSkin three-step system is the answer.

While the products haven't officially launched yet, the system is touted to meet the needs of all three women, despite their different skin types. According to scientific researcher and dermatological expert Dr. Ron DiSalvo, Senior Scientist at Perfect Science Labs, the developers of PerfectSkin, "As women who are constantly in the spotlight and juggling hectic schedules, the Kardashian sisters need a skin care system that's as simple, as it is effective."

With the actual types of products and the active ingredients still under wraps, we can only speculate that the ladies wouldn't lend their names to just any old skincare company. "I have literally tried everything out there and nothing even comes close to PerfectSkin, " says Kim Kardashian. "It's easier and more effective than anything else I've tried, and they are the only skin care products I use."

So when will the Kardashians' skincare secrets be revealed? We asked the brand's publicist for more information and were thwarted with a "wait and see" response. And there's no PerfectSkin website. After a little of our own digging on Dr. Di Salvo, we found that he has a long history in the beauty industry, at companies including Redken and John Paul Mitchell as well as a skincare company called Amaza that seems to specialize in anti-aging products.

From the little we know about the PerfectSkin three-step regimen, we're hedging our bets on it being a Proactive type of project, maybe even involving an infomercial.

What we do know for sure is that all will be revealed sometime this spring, so stay tuned.

What do you think it'll be? Leave a comment below and tell us. And, the Kardashian girls are everywhere these days. Do you think we'll ever get sick of them?
